Omni Edu Bots...

has anyone made an omni drive edubot(not crab drive)? I was going to make one and was wondering if anyone had already done it.

Re: Omni Edu Bots...

We made a mini bot that used the IFI or EDU controller, we didnt use the EDU motors because we bought ones that have encoders built into them. If your going to be at annapolis this weekend it will be in the pits.

Are those the Standard Transwheels or the Urethane Robot transwheels?

Awesome BTW

Wow... that looks pretty cool. I tried to make one with those same wheels once, but it refused to move due to lack of traction.

For us the motors are underpowered so it has a hard time getting started. Its been useful for programming because we can watch the wheels and see what they are doing to work on autonomous and other things. If we wanted to add more grip we could always groove them using the dremel just like we did for our big bot.

well the same company makes the same exact wheels but wiht way more traction.. the urethane transwheels made for robots and such instead of assembly lines

Re: Omni Edu Bots...

I know KRUNCH (Team #79) made a close to exact replica version of there robots for last year, and this year out of the eduBOT kit. There robots for last year and this year both use omni-directional drive.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that Team 79 used a swerve drive opposed to an omni drive.

Re: Omni Edu Bots...

79 has the " swerve/crab " drive.. I don't believe The edu robotics parts has omni-wheels as of yet..

So you could build an omni drive out of primarily edu parts.. but you'd have to find/make the omni-wheels

This seems to even be a problem with the real version omni bots. Finding good ready made omni-wheels, that fit FIRST bots for its application.

Re: Omni Edu Bots...

did you figure out that the transwheels worked better than the omni wheels?
on www.omniwheel.com, they have them both for abouth the same price

also, did the standard edu motors have too little power?

We bought the transwheels from there, and our omniwheels for the real bot there. The reason we went with the transwheel was they are closer in size to the metal omniwheels from omniwheel.com. If your building a full size bot i would really recommend making your own omni wheels and not buying the metal ones from omniwheel.com they are pretty heavy and bulky.

we didnt try to use the EDU motors we bought our own with encoders built in already.

Re: Omni Edu Bots...

i saw a couple of teams at the florida regional using the 3" plastic omni wheels on their full size robot. I didnt look at what you guys were using, but i thought spam was using them.

Spam had some made. We used the 3.75 diameter omniwheels with the aluminum hubs and neoprene rollers, then we grooved the rollers to give us traction. Somthing that spam had troubles with. Us and Spam were the only omnibots at UCF, maybe the country.

you can see our wheels stacked up here after groovin(no they dont dance...or do they)
