Question QUESTION OF THE WEEK [03-10-02]

Hi all. Now that the first weekend of regionals are over, most of us had a chance to look at what this year's competition looks like before we have to see it ourselves at our own regional. I was lucky enough to watch the regionals with a few other teams on a nice connection, and I thought I had a great time watching the game. The KSC regional was fun to watch, and it changed a few things in my mind about how the game is. With that in mind, here is the question of the week...

Questions 03/10/02: How do you like this year's game, and how are you feeling about participating in a regional after seeing how it's like?

Have fun ,
and good luck at your competition...

-Ken Leung

I dont think I have seen enough to judge this years game as good or bad. We have only seen a week of regionals. I think better strategies and ball bots will come into play more in finals once regionals with larger amounts of ball bots are present.
I am eagerly awaiting the Long Island regional, I dont know how we will do but we will find out this coming thursday- saturday!

From a driver's perspective, this game is much more fun to play than last years. I enjoyed playing it and it appeared that other teams did too. Yes it is more physical, but I didn't hear of any teams getting upset. In fact after I went up to teams after matches to make sure we didn't bang each other up too much they were really happy to have played at all. I wish I could remember the teams number, but they had an absolutely great time in a match that they played with us. One that was physical and they ended up losing but had a great time doing it.

Awesome

This was a more exciting game than I have ever seen before. Kamen set out to make an exciting game, and if you saw the KSC finals then you know he did it imho.

To be honest when the game was first enveiled I was extremely dissapointed. Throught the 6weeks I grew to like it by bounds. Out team went to the VCU regional to scout and I CAN"T WAIT to compete at LONG ISLAND! I love this game so much! We have been thinking of many strategies and it looks as though with out bot we are going to have very interesting matches. The Qualifying matches were some-what boring at many times because the bots were very passive, the finals were much different, after seeing VCU I'm sure that we will be more aggresive, as I am sure many many other bots will be. I've liked the past two years games a lot, however I think that this years game is slighlty past last years.
I Can't Wait! See Everyone at LI and New Haven as well as the Nationals!

Going into the VCU regional, i really did not like the game. It seemed to me that FIRST was leaning towards battlebots. This was partially true. At VCU, i saw robots ramming into each other when there was not even a goal around!

I also thought the game would be boring, especially if our strategy went acording to plan(grab 3 goals and lock down). However, i was proved wrong. The game has proved to be really exciting. Being on the competition team could have added to my excitement but overall i enjoyed the game after going to VCU

I think the game is really exciting. The day after the rules were given my team went to a local pizza place and a couple of us sat there and stratigized with cups peanuts and m'n'ms. It was pretty cool to see how many stategies and counter strategies we could come up with.

I like the game a lot. It is really exciting to watch, with the goal moving by just some inches (if it is on a zone border) deciding about win or loss of an alliance. Furthermore, the game often gave great chances to use the alliance's capabilities as a team and the three-times-the-lowest-score rule makes even single point very important. I trembled with the teams during lot of matches, not just my own team's ones.

the game is great!

At first, I thuoght the game was boring.
In the other two years I participated (2000 and 2001) there was a ramp in the middle and bars dividing the field, and very complicated rules (specially about balancing the bridge and the time multiplier). And this year they finally managed to make a game that is more simple to understand and to count points, and I thought it was too simlpe, too easy and with very few different ways to play, but as time passed I saw I was totaly wrong.
The game requires inteligence just like in the other years.

One bad point is that this year there are not A LOT of different robot styles like last year. My scouting sheet last year had a lot of gaps to fill for each team because the robots could do many many things, and this year I made it with just a couple of options.
