Tie Breakers

In reviewing the events of VCU I thought about a lot....one thing cought my attention, and that was ties.

Surprisingly, one of my teams was involved in 3 or 4 matches out of 8 that resulted in ties. Unfortunately, we lost 2 of them. Every single tie was broken by how many goals were in scoring position.

Not only this, but of course there were a high number of games won by one or two points.

This made me realize how under-rated balls really are in this game. Everyone seems to post that balls have become obsolete in the game, but for our team, having one more ball in our goal/s would have won the match, and would have boosted up that team probably into the top 10, if not the top 8.

I'm not sayin that just goal grabbers are bad, this team was nothing but a goal grabber, but that teams might want to really take into consideration really what they are going to do with those balls in the player station during the match. This may be WHEN they want to start throwing, this may be WHO is going to throw this. I can't count the number of times that I watched one team have a great human player who was making great shots, and the other team seemed to be wasting balls.

I dunno, just what I was thinking....

I agree

I was the captain of the team adam was refering too. And just for the info on the ties if we had won the points for the lowest scoring match we tied in we would have been in a tie for 3rd place. SO I really don't like the was the winner is decided

Good human players at the Langley regional could score 7 or 8 out of 10 balls. This is close to the 10 points for a goal, if your robot has a ball grabbing mechanism it might even become crucial. On the other hand, if you don't have power over the goals, no ball will help you.

Jan

P.S.: My team lost the Langley finals by one point - if one ball out of our opposing alliance's goal had been in ours, we would have won. Congratulations to them, it was an exciting match and they obviously won it because they got more points - in the end with balls...

yes, i think the ball bots are important, but our bot is solely at goal grabber, we are happy though to have a killer human player, he has won some scrimage matches for us

Yes, we (87) were concerned about that final match, because we thought that the strategy that our alliance was using for the quarter- and semi-final rounds wouldn't work in that second match of the finals. Was ball handling not on the table for that last round/match? I wasn't on the field for the final, so I don't know how the discussions ran

Yeah, those tiebreakers really killed our team, didn't they? Sitting in the top ten the whole time until that match.....Anways, I think priorities lie with goals, but to be in an alliance with a goal grabber that can efficiently pick up balls would be best. And human players are key for padding the points or breaking ties, because # of balls in goals come before # of goals in goal zone, don't they? That's just my opinion anyways.

Tie breakers are really important and as the human player, one of the mentors quizzed me on what i should do in certain situations.

(Hint: Read the one about balls on opposite side of the playing field)
