Driving to Championships - ideas?

Our team is in the middle of planning our drive from Kokomo to Atlanta.

We'll be taking the Huskie Brigade route (I-65) to Nashville and then I-24 to Atlanta. We figure this to be about a 10 hour trip.

So... there is going to be some boredom combined with anxiety on this trip. About 1/2 of our students are freshman and we are also bringing down the Indiana state champion FIRST Lego League team (a team from Kokomo, of course!).

We are thinking of various "games" or "activities" for our trip. Stuff like "take a picture of the most '45's you can find", or "find the most FIRST team numbers" on the road signs. Oh, the fun we are gonna have!

We plan on leaving early on Wednesday morning (4/14). I am sure that many teams are going to drive the same route as us, which means that we could even coordinate some activities.

So, if you have any ideas (goofy or not), post 'em.

Thanks,
Andy B.

Re: Driving to Championships - ideas?

You could always play "Name that obscure breakfast item".....you guys seem to be good at that one

But I think the team numbers thing is a really good idea...you have no idea how many times I wanted to smack someone over the head (myself included) for not knowing the team number and distinguishing name by heart. I'd start first with the teams in your division, once that list is released.

...or you could print out all the old 3 Questions threads and play FIRST trivia. And there's always the coloring book.

And I'll probably think of more later once Im not so tired.

Re: Driving to Championships - ideas?

Not just team numbers, but have one point for the number, two for the name and double points if they are at championships. Plus a bonus point if you can name other team info, where they are from, robot name, what there current robot looks like and does, past history (championship, awards, special first programs).

Top points win a prize...maybe some of that barbequed bread, err I mean toast. Or maybe more something like a blinking pin.

Just don't allow any silly string....(4 14 hour trip to and from Houston in two weeks last year)

Movies can be good.

edit: You could play name that team by the color of the vehicles you pass (or get passed by). I would only hope you wouldn't see any bright green or bright pink cars, sorry 365 and 233.

Re: Driving to Championships - ideas?

My team is leaving today for the 14 hour trip to Houston(me not included..too bad, college can be annoying sometimes). One of the english classes gives credit for reports on any of the AFI Top 100 movies so they are taking several of those movies to watch. I know several of these movies aren't quite PG but they get extra credit and the age group is higher this year. We had lots of younger siblings last year and got to watch more animated films (not dissing animated films but come on). Check out if teacher would give any credit for reports on certain movies. I know we all seem to be struggling with grades this time of year.

Re: Driving to Championships - ideas?

We drove to VA with team 839 in 2k2 and it took about 15-16 hours. We filled the time watching different movies and playing cards. We made sure to make a reasonable amount of stops for people to get out, stretch, get ice cream etc. Parents filled up a cooler with snacks and drinks for the ride as well.

It was actually a lot of fun with little effort made to 'entertain'. Then again, maybe we're just easily amused... :-P

Oh man, this could be priceless...

Baker, tell me that you are driving an old station wagon with wooden side panels?!?!? What I would give for a picture of that.

For some reason, when I think of the Technokats trip, I can't help but think of National Lampoons Vacation!

Re: Driving to Championships - ideas?

Team 343 usually has Video tapes of other regionals to watch on the road. Lots of scouting done on the trip there. For us, this time though, it is only a 2 hour drive. This will probably hurt our scouting efforts.

Good luck to all, I look forward to seeing everyone there!

Re: Driving to Championships - ideas?

Allright... for some of you SERIOUS veteran Technokittens.
This is the game some of us 229ers play to kill time.
(It's a good way to keep from falling asleep in Materials Science lectures )

2 people play.
The first person names a FIRST team name, and their number.
The second person does the same with a different team.
Write all these teams down, and make sure there are no repeat teams.

Keep going until someone can't think of any new teams.
(No cheating!)

There is some strategy involved, because obviously you want to name the teams that the other person is most familiar with first, then move on to the teams that the other person wouldn't know.

For instance, if I was playing against Baker, I would name all the Indiana teams first, then move onto teams I know he's friends with/has partnered with, then move onto the better known national teams, then finally move onto the "obscure" new england teams.

Yes... we're FIRST-dorks, but we prefer the term "students-of-the-game".

FIRST trivia is also fun.
Bring some (Motorola of course) 2 way radios, and play van vs. van.
Which van can stump the other one?

Also barring that, spend the whole 10 hour trip picking on DJ.

DJ, Amanda Morrison. and I are going to play, "Lets leave after the TechnoKittens and race to beat them there". Then in the car, we can play "Name this country song" (I will win that one ) I am thinking that we can get there easily within 7 hours, not the 8 hours that maps.Yahoo!.com says. This sure will be an experice that I wont forget.

All the cool Indiana teams are driving to Nationals Amanda's brother, Andy, is supplying a good amount of classic rock for us to sing terribly on the way down, and I'm bringing Dramamine and sleeping pills to drown out the sounds of their voices after I lose mine. We're leaving late Tuesday night, and 71 trips usually end up to a bad karaoke bar with Pepsi as drinks.
