Re: Canadian SUPER Regional

Some shooters are very good, our shooter has been extremely good, aside from some bad luck we also got our hook on the abr everytime, and hanged 4 out of 7 times, cameback down in 1 so aorund 3 hangings. Our shooter, only missed one sho out of 7 matches, what a great guy to have in our box. I ntoiced some other teams had great shooters too, very nice, its been very exciting soo far, with 48 teams going to the next team i hope someone sees us as the worthy partner we can be and picks us Good luck to all

Re: Canadian SUPER Regional

after a very exciting and emotionally stressful canadian "SUPER" regional, i believe some thank yous and congratulations are in order.

to teams 33, 639, and 1112, congratulations on a well deserved win. you all earned it.

to team 1006, congratulations on the chairman's award, from what i hear your entry was AMAZING. thank you for your support in the elims on saturday. the alliance could not have gotten as far as we did without you. excellent team and excellent machine.

and finally to team 1114, all i have to say is WOW. congratulations on topping field of 75 teams to be the number one seed and a well deserved quality award. you are truly a quality team. you are also perhaps the best alliance partner we have ever had and we showed it out on the field. we complimented each other so well and played to our strengths. i tihnk i can speak for the team when i say that we are looking forward to working with you not only in atlanta but in years to come. just remember, you've made some really good friends south of the border!

Thumbs up Re: Canadian SUPER Regional

I just wanted to take a bit of time and extend my appreciation to 48's drive team crew of Paco, Frank, and Pat. Your aggressive, accurate driving, your extremely fast and efficient bar hanging skills, and your pinpoint 5-point ball shooting (not to mention some great strategy from neifer48) have thrilled and excited many FIRST fans this year and helped create on of the most amazing series of elimination matches I've ever had the pleasure to witness. I would also like to recognize my fellow engineering mentors and Team 48 students who worked so amazingly well together in such a compressed time to repair two robot issues during the latter stages of the elims and get xtremachen7 back on the field. It was the greatest feeling to see the arm and drivetrain spring back to life following those repairs. What a rush.

1114 and 1006 - we were honored to have been selected to work alongside such quality people and strong robots. As always, our Canadian friends made us feel more than welcome during our visit up north. Congrats to the winning teams on taking the Canadian Regional championship - both alliances played like champions, but in the end, there could only be one victor. It truly was a SUPER regional. Great job, everyone!

Re: Canadian SUPER Regional

Does anybody remember who was awarded the Xerox Creativity Award?

I'm on 1141 and had to leave early (I stayed for us getting closely eliminated by 639 and their partner). As soon as I got home, I checked the internet on usfirst's site, and I was surprised to see that we won it. I wanted to know what the guy said when we were presented with it, so I asked some of my teammates over MSN. Neither of them had any idea what I was talking about.

So, is this an error by the website guy, or are both my friends amnesiacs? It's plausible that we won it, since we had a few people tell us that our bar-grabbing mechanism was very clever, but if neither of my friends remember winning it, then something wierd must have happened.

Edit: Here's the link to the awards page:
http://www2.usfirst.org/2004comp/Events/ON/Awards.html

And as of 11:04am on 04/04/04, the Xerox Creativity award went to:
Xerox Creativity Award
1141
Sir Sandford Fleming College/Trent University/GE Canada, Inc. & Thomas A. Stewart Secondary School
Peterborough, ON Canada

In actuality, it was 1114 simbotics.. it appears that the person who was entering in data just made a typographical error and the database cross matched it to the team number. Sorry to dissapoint you, but its always nice to dream huh?

Question Re: Canadian SUPER Regional

Its a Typo. The xerox creativity award went to 1114 not 1141. 1141's bar grabber was very creative though.

The Canadian regional was truly amazing. Congrats to 33 and 639. 33 you were an amazing ball gatherer. 639, one of the few teams who could beat us to the bar. You two were a very strong alliance. I look forward to seeing you at Championship.

48, what can i say? You were amazing. Your robot is so powerfull. Paul, your an amazing driver. Chris, super stratigist. If we hadn't have broken our steering motor, who knows what would have happened. I'm glad that alliance selections worked out for us here, and I look forward to working together in the future.

1006, I was very pleased that we could pick you. I can't say enough good things about you and the things you are doing for FIRST. Also, congrats on your Chairmens Award. We both made GM proud.

Good luck to all the teams I've mentioned and We'll see you at Championship.

Man, I knew I shouldn't have re-checked this thread. It was a recipe for disappointment. Congratulations to simbotics. I imagine that would've been rough to hear for my team, if he mentioned the extending 'legs' (which both Simbotics and my team have) while introducing the winner. Ah well, we got the engineering and design award from 22, which is infinetely more awards than we got last year. Next year, we shall win a real award.

Re: Canadian SUPER Regional

I'd like to say one big huge thank you to teams 1114 and 48

Simbotics, you guys are amazing and we were honoured to be chosen for the finals by a team like yours. Our team is still talking about it and I'm sure will be for a long time to come.

48- you guys totally rock! You made an already enjoyable competition that much more exciting, and we look forward to seeing you again!

I think it's safe to say we made GM proud All 5 GM sponsored teams made it to the finals, and all put up a good show.

Thanks for the congrats on Chairmans, it was a great surprise to win. It was the perfect ending to one totally amazing regional.

Thanks again to 1114 and 48, and we look forward to seeing you in Atlanta!

Re: Canadian SUPER Regional

Wow. That was an exhausting weekend. Don't get me wrong, it was well worth it.

The event came off without a hitch. The Canadian Regional is always the best run event by FIRST, and this year was no exception. The volunteers, judges and staff were all extremely pleasant and helpful. Considering the immense task of running an event with two fields, 75 teams and 16 alliances in the elimination round, the fact that everything ran without a hitch is no small feat.

There are so many people I want to thank, and I really don't know where to start.

Team 1241 - You guys are the best rookie team that I've ever seen. I stress the word team here. Everything you guys do is awesome. You had an amazing robot, a beautiful animation, brought 500 loud and energetic teams to the arena including a dance pack! Most importantly every single member of your team exuded gracious professionalism. This team should be a model for all rookies in the future.

Team 1006 - It was great running with you guys. As for your Chairman's award, it was well deserved. Our two teams have worked closely together in the past and I can say that this team deserves this honour with much certainty.

Teams 639, 33 & 1112 - A well earned championship. All three of you had robust and high quality robots. Team 33, I think it must be illegal to pickup balls that easily. Wow.

Steve Warren - This is a man who loves FIRST. He gives up all of his spare time to help his own team, and when he's not doing that he's running across North America to be an announcer at different regionals. Despite how much we make fun of each other, I actually think he's a pretty alright guy. Congratulations on being named volunteer of the year.

Roly Anderson - Mr. A., I am so glad you took home the Woodie Flower's award. This is a man who has given up so much for FIRST, it's great to see him get recognized. I mean, he used to let Team 188 build their robot in his basement. As I mentor my team, I can only hope that I can impact the lives of my students as much as you did to mine seven years ago. You are the best. Congratulations.

Team 48 - Guys, you rock. From day 1 of this regional we were hoping we could run with you. Your robot is so powerful, yet it moves around the field so smoothly. We just loved working with your team. It's too bad we got derailed by some technical failures at the end. Still, working with your team was just a pleasure. You guys are a great team and we're proud to call you guys friends.

I guess it's time for me to regroup and get ready for nationals.

See you all in Atlanta.

I would like to congratulate all the finalists for playing so well and giving us something to droll on.

I want to congrat 1006 for their chairmans they truly deserved it. 48 and 1114 your robots can directly be sent to mars . And 33 what a great robot and i specially loved your drivetrain, i mean you guys could push anyone around.

Thanks to 853 for picking us. We had lots of fun.

Hope to see some of you at the wonderland Competition. (who ever lives close enough or who has enough money to spend jus to come to the off-season competition )

Re: Canadian SUPER Regional

HEHE, I'm the first one to post here, the rest of our team is prolly still asleep.

First of all... WOW... I still can't believe it.

Team 1114, you guys had a hell of a robot. Congrats for being number one seed and went undefeated all the way into the finals. Hope to see you in nats and again in Canada next year!

Team 48, you put up a hell of a fight out there. You hung under the most pressure, quickly and flawlessly. You pushed almost every robot around effortlessly. It was a beautiful robot; I personally loved it.

Team 1006, you stepped in when 1114 was damaged, you pushed us around. Your robot was very unique and cool. Congrats on the regional chairman's award as well. The first alliance was very lucky to have you.

I already posted my thanks and congrats to our allies here.

Thanks to Yan, Casey, Kristen, Nick, Alex, and Nathan, our drive rotation for a job well done.

Thanks to Nick (again) for your programming, you were down the pits constantly, trying to get that autonomous to work.

Thanks to Emilio (melo, emo), when our pneumatics broke you were always able to to fix it. We could not have pulled it through without you.

My special thanks to Vanessa, our scout leader. You got us together and mauled over the what teams we should pick and came up with two awesome teams. You crashed where ever she could because she was wroking so hard. It was a pleasure scouting for you.

Thanks to Doug, Roger for guiding us when time ran short and our robot was not yet inspected. You never panicked, always calm and understanding. We could not have done this without you.

Good job everyone, this regional will stick with me forever.

For all the people who attended or saw the regional...

What did you think about the change in playoffs - the top 16 teams could select instead of the normal 8. What about the extra awards? I'll offer my thoughts soon.

Re: Canadian SUPER Regional

Personally, while I didn't mind it, I think I would have preferred eight alliances (and that's not just because I was captain of the seventh alliance). I realize FIRST is trying to keep the ratio of elimination round teams to non-picked teams the same, but IMO the ratio could go down. The extra playoff round simply meant more could break, which is precisely what happened with us.

Well...64% of the teams at the Canadian regional went to the elimination rounds. The regionals had an average of approximately 47 teams. And with an average of 25.85 teams going to the elim's (because of the canadian regional), the average percentage of teams making the elim's at regionals is 55%. The canadian regional is one extreme, while VCU and GLR were the other extreme with only 38.7% of the teams making the elim's. If the Canadian regional only had 8 alliances, then 32% of the teams would make the elim's, which would be very close to the 32.9% of the teams at nationals that make the elim's. While the percentage for the regional with 8 alliances is much closer to nationals, the percentage for 16 alliances is much closer to the average for the regionals (which does not include nationals). I was going to make a conclusion out of this information, but after typing it all in, I seem to have lost that conclusion among all the numbers...so there is just some statistics to chew on.
