What sort of gyrochip?

It's a BEI Gyrochip.
It uses a vibrating quartz tuning fork sensing element.

I assume since you want to use it in autonomous mode that you're planning on using it in competition this year. Be warned that the BEI Gyrochip that was included in the kits in previous years is not legal for use on robots this year. From the FIRST Q&A:

Q: Are we allowed to use gyros that were given by F.I.R.S.T. last year?
A: This issue has been reviewed. The answer is now NO, you cannot use gyros that were in prior year's kits.

Unless you can justify it under R71, that is.

No, we were thinking of buying a new one. We are a rookie team, and didn't know it was included before.

For that to be legal, you need to obtain it from one of the 4 suppliers (Digikey, Future, Newark, or Radio Shack) and it cannot cost more than $100. Last time I checked, you couldn't buy the gyrochip from any of those vendors, and I think it cost more than $100 anyway.

A better bet would be to check out the ADXRS150EB from Analog Devices - it's a better gyro to begin with, weighs less, and it meets the above requirements.

At the AZ Regionals a coach of 980 told me they used gyros in their robot, and if you've seen that beauty in autonomous mode then I can see why you'd want some gyros of your own. Here's a Link to their sight. The contact info's at the bottom. Based on my experience with them, they'd be happy to tell you all about it.

When our auto didn't work in Canada, our head programmer used wheel encoders to move the robot out exactly 2.5ft and rotate left/right at precise 45 degree angles (gyro) while the Chicken Dance song was playing (thanks Mr. Breadner for honoring my request) and the entire drive team was doing the chicken dance.

So what if it wasn't useful. It was awesome
