Alliance picking at VCU

At VCU the top 8 seeded teams were givin the option of picking other alliance captians. (i.e. 1st place teams picks 2nd place team). When in the rules it says that this was not allowed.

How was alliance choosing done at other regionals?

at the Lone Star regional, it was the same way. Personally, I don't think this creates a very competitive finals competition because most exceptional teams will be paired with equally exceptional teams, while the lesser teams are only given the option of picking from equally lesser teams. I'm not complaining that the system is unfair; I'm only saying that it creates a single alliance that dominates throughout the finals (not very entertaining to watch as your team gets trounced by the unbeatable alliance)

We were the fourth seed. We got picked by the first seed. We picked a good machine that could grab two goals with our last pick. We were the "unbeatable alliance."

We got trounced in the quarters by the 10th seed.

Thumbs up alliance picking

At the Long Island Regional the first place seed picked the fifth place seed. My team, team 358, was seeded tenth but because of the alliance picking we moved up and also became alliance captains, so of course we were happy. I don't think that it cahnges the outcome of the competition because in other years our team has been on the #1 seeded alliance and lost in the first round. This year we were the lowest seeded alliance and we beat the highest seeded team. What would be unfair is if all three teams on one alliance were among the the top eight seeded teams, which is pretty much impossible.

It was like this at KSC. I do not think it was unfair, because the best teams in the elimination rounds do not always seed highest in the qualifications round. For example, ball handling robots seemed to do quite well in the qualifying rounds at Nasa, but were almost useless in the eliminations (where goal control is vital).
