Actually, I believe private schools are allowed to discriminate against protected classes as long as they don't take federal money (or possibly state money). Given that's a very small minority of schools, it probably isn't applicable in this case.

Re: Ahh! Prom!

yeah i feel kind of bad for you but I like the idea of going to your next regional with the sign around your neck. im sure some one would agree .... lol ..

as to going to prom just to hang out with friends, get dressed up, spend a lot of money, etc. i think its worth it. that being said, i havent been to my prom yet, and when i do, i will be getting dressed up but will most probably not be with most of my friends because they are all going to prom this year and I wont be because it is my older brother's prom too and he doesnt want me there, which i can respect (my friends are in his/my grade - it has to do with my screwed up grades where it is hard for me to explain what grade im in anymore ... ) , and because my boyfriend doesnt live near me (an almost 23 hour drive away according to yahoo maps) he probably wont be there, but like i said i will be going and i will have fun and i will be with some of my not-so-close friends ....

but then again, half of the fun in prom is going shopping for the dress, doing your hair and makeup in a rush so youre not late, worrying over every detail, and the after-party ...

The above is NOT true, even though some groups would like it to be. Freedom of association includes the right NOT to associate with certain classes if you so choose. This has been reaffirmed by the Supreme Court on several occasions.

This is a PRIVATE school. By their very nature, they have chosen to associate with some people and not with others. They are allowed to discriminate if they choose and set their own policy on who attends their events and under what circumstances. Notice I have been careful not to include any particular group they might be discriminating against, because it doesn't matter.

For example, a school for left handed red-heads would be perfectly legal and they would be perfectly justifed in excluding brunettes, blondes and right handers from any or all events if they so chose. They would also be permitted to dictate that you could only attend their events in groups of five if they wished. Though as has been mentioned elsewhere, they should not use Federal or possibly State monies (depending on where you live) to fund such activity. (Why should the Government be involved in a private association anyway?)

In recent years, certain activist groups have decided they have a right to poke their nose wherever they want in the interest of being "accepted". That doesn't mean it is right, or that they have a "right" to do so. Nor do we have to accept their propaganda that this is so.

Just setting the record straight,

ChrisH

Brm789, I can see this means a lot to you. I'm sure there are several young men around here who are eligible, near enough, and gentleman enough to help you out here. I hope at least one of them will.

Re: Ahh! Prom!

To be honest, I find that prom is hyped-up too much. It's not as big as everyone makes it out to be but the thing is...it's something you only really get to experience once (speaking...of course...about Sr. Prom which is completly different then Jr. Prom.). Chris, yes...it is important to me which is something I hate to admit. I'm usually the last person to follow the crowd but in this case...I am. I do hope you are right in that there are good decent guys out there who will help me out because otherwise...I'm buying an escort or something. I dunno...maybe I'll just buy the second ticket and show up stag claiming my date "got sick" and couldn't make it. Either way, I'm going. Heh. I'll have fun and that's it.

Re: Ahh! Prom!

May I ask a question...why is it almost everyone I know has said that? Like...Breanne...I don't even know how you know Coco nor do I know you but you just said to ask him and then when I was saying something about it at my team meeting, another student piped in and said "Take Coco!" I am aware Coco is one of the sweetest guys and most noble on my team but...is there another reason? And the reason I havn't asked Coco is I barelly know Coco and not to mention...he's on my team. It'd be awkward just in general since I want nothing started with my team mates and rumors spread faster then a forest fire in our team.

Re: Ahh! Prom!

Coco's my best friend. Yeh he is the sweetest! But i say ask him, because i don't see a reason why he would say no. And on the rhumor thing, just make it clear that you're going as friends because you didn't have a date. You can also use this opportunity to get to know him better. lol. just tell him that Bree said he should take you

I can't find anything that says the Delaware department of education has a non discrimination policy towards marital status.

However, even if they did, I think you would have a hard time arguing that they were discriminating based on marital status. Take 3 sets of hypothetical people. One is a male-female couple, unmaried. The second is a male-male couple. The third is a lone female. All 5 people have the same marital status: single.

sorry to bring this up so late. I saw it when it was posted, but haven't had a chance to gather my thoughts until now.

Re: Ahh! Prom!

Joe,
This is the tricky thing about private schools. While all three should be considered, only two of the three would be acceptable at my school and only one of them at my dance. The school is a private CATHOLIC school and because of such, they can deny things that a public school can not. As far as I am aware of...a girl in Delaware Public school who becomes pregnant may contunie to attend school until it is no longer healthy for her or the baby. I have known of a few girls who carried full term in Delaware Public Schools. My school...has another opinion. A girl who is pregnant may contunie to attend classes until she shows. There have been a few exceptitions to this rule in both cases...and it can get ugly.

The Prom is one of those things were the school has and is the final and last say. While I could push the issue and demand to be allowed to attend based on my legal rights, it would be more trouble then it is worth. My friends would think I was rather odd and it would just prove how dateless I am truly am. This rule isn't really that bad except when you get into a situtition like I am in where you can't find a date.

Oh yes...my school has stated that same sex relationships are highly frowned up by the school and the church. I have never heard of them removing someone from the school from being homosexual however...it wouldn't surprise me. This is one of the downsides of attending a private school. You have to listen to ridiculious rules.

Re: Ahh! Prom!

Erin, mi amiga and my namesake, I've found the answer to your problem. They say you have to bring a guy? Why not just buy one of those inflatable guys, like they have at Spencers? Having gone to all-girl school for 5 years (need... escape... now....), I've seen countless answers to the old 'I don't have a date' quandry. One person even brought her dog! It was male. It works. When in crisis, always observe the loophole, every school has one.

Re: Ahh! Prom!

Best bet.....find a guy on your team or one near you, and ask him. Get to know im a little bit first, and then see if he'll go with you. When is your prom? I (unforunatly) cannot go to mine, because it conflicts with my internship @ the bermuda zoo (w00t w00t for school trips to tropical islands) but i AM going to my friend's prom who lives on the other side of the state. (it's kinda cool when your parents' best friend's son joins robotics, cuz u've known him your WHOLE life, and o yea then u become better friends and then go to prom with him!! yahh pat!!)
I've gone to prom every year i've been in FIRST (aka 3 years, i'm a junior) with a guy who's in FIRST too (this year i AM expanding outside my team though, lol)
I hope you get a date though, maybe one of you're friend's boyfriend's friends?
good luck

I've been thinking about prom myself. I've never been much of a dancer but it's more that there's no one I want to be there with. The only person I have in mind might freak if I ask so... woe is meee... WOE IS MEE!!!!!!

Ahh I'll get over it...

Re: Ahh! Prom!

My junior year, one of our teammates had a g/f who lived in Oregon (this takes place in CT, by the way), and she couldn't make it. So, I had read something in one of those prom-ish magazines about a guy in the same spot who brought his video camera to the prom, took pictures with it, bought it a corsage...so that his date was there in some form

So my friend ended up bringing a female friend, but taking the video camera as his date. And yes, he took pictures with both.

The next robot season, one of our teammates couldnt make it to Nationals, so we brought along a camera and named it "Virtual Bob".
