YMTC: Should YMTC have a future

You Make The Call (YMTC) is a series of situations where you can play ref and make a call. YMTC situations are not meant to represent situations that have occurred at competitions.

First, thanks to everyone that mailed in suggestions for the YMTC situations!

Second, everyone who participated in YMTC is a winner therefore please stop by team 118's pit to pick up your trophy. DISCLAIMER: All Krispy Kreme Donuts shall be TROPHIES while they reside inside of the Georgia Dome complex per section 27.5 of the 2004 Championship Site Info guide. Of course, when off-site, they magically turn back into edible donuts.

Third, the results of the YMTC polls were surprising; often, we in the CD community, who live and breathe the rules along with having time to thoroughly research the rules, disagreed on what should be called. Regardless of the analysis, one result is that the refs have a very difficult task. So, please let's take a few extra seconds out of our days at the Championships to thank them for what sometimes must seem like a thankless job!

Fourth, the final situation before Championships:
One night at about 2:00 am, a boy from Mississippi begins some You Make The Call threads. He believes it would be good for everyone to discuss situations that would focus on interpreting various rules.

YOU MAKE THE CALL! Should the Mississippi Boy

Re: YMTC: Should YMTC have a future

Yes! Because it teaches people to lean to look at some rules that may seem simple and straitforword, but are actually misleading and can have several interpretations. By examining these rules and their possibiliteies, these teams could play much more successfully in the future. If this Mississippi boy does post a situation, everyone who even views the discussion of the rule would be a winner!

Keep posting them, some people like to pretend they're lawyers.

also, try to get FIRST to give official interpretations and add them to the rules early next year.

Agreed! Lettin FIRST understand some of the possible interpritations of the rules would not only allow them to make easier decisions at the regionals, but also give them ideas on how to make future rules more "User Friendly". Who knows, maybe someones suggestion will become the newest competition rule, thanks to these polls!

Re: YMTC: Should YMTC have a future

YMTC is a great practice in interpreting the rules and applying them to interesting situations.

I don't think YMTC would have been nearly as benificial if Dave Lavery hadn't jumped in. As someone who's initmately involved in creating the game and the rules, it was exciting to see his viewpoint.

Dave
Are the Krispy Kreme Donuts still considered "Trophies" under Section 27.5 while they reside inside of the Georgia Dome, while they reside inside of ME? If so, watch out for your trophies!!!

Genesis (In the very fine print)
Let there be Krispy Kremes and where there are Krispy Kremes, let there be Dave

Hehe, I pulled a "Lavery(TM) ." YTMC was an excellent idea, if for nothing more than it puts us, the spectators and competitors, in the refs shoes. "If faced with X situation, what would you have done?" Granted, it has been said that these hypothetical situations have not happened; however, its the frame of mind and resulting decision that is being channeled here. We spend minutes to hours thinking of the proper way to judge these scenarios and our hard working FIRST refs take 5 minutes. Doubled sided awareness. Interesting. Its a tough job, I wouldn't do it (but there are more reasons than the tough calls that have to be made).

The refs are doing a fantastic job this year (better than last year, no matter what anyone chooses to say) and I hope they keep it up for the final stretch.

Re: YMTC: Should YMTC have a future

The only problem I see with runing YMTC before the season is that we really don't know what's going to happen. A lot of these situations might not have even been imagined begore they became commonplace at the regionals.

I back YMTC 100% for the simple fact b/c It teaches fellow teams A) what goes through a Ref's Mind, B) How do be a fair Ref, C) It gets you into practice with the rules esp. if your planning on having a Ref Position at any FIRST / Non FIRST or FLL Sanctioned Event

I also hope someone will champion the YMTC postings after the January 2005 Kickoff. I’ve found the postings to be interesting reading, stumulating and and useful topic of discussion.

Re: YMTC: Should YMTC have a future

Yes! I absolutely love this idea of YMTC's. I have participated in a few and I can testify that it is a great idea, and it definitely should continue. I also think that FIRST perhaps could give a bunch of YMTC's to future refs/judges as practice for the competitions. Keep it coming!

And under rule <X72>, "If a Mississippi boy begins a constructive idea between the hours of 1:00 am and 3:00 am, he must follow through." There is your ruling.

'They' already had the handcuffs out when I arrived at the GWCC with 6 Krispy Kreme boxes. I think the Secret Service spotted me on Peachtree Avenue with the boxes. After 'they' asked me to open the boxes, they immediately put away the cuffs and said, "Oh, those are just the YMTC trophies! Please come on in."

Since the pit announcer would not allow me to make an announcement, I delivered your trophy to your pit. Hopefully your team mates did not lose it in their stomachs nor did Dave visit your pit because he smelled something he liked before you got a chance to 'enjoy' your trophy.

Have a nice off-season,
Lucien
