San Jose's Bellarmine wins robotics honor

Mercury News Wire Services

A San Jose high school team emerged from nearly 300 to win top honors at the 2004 FIRST Robotics Competition Championship in Atlanta on Saturday.

The ``Cheesy Poofs'' from Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose won the highest honor, The FIRST Chairman's Award, which recognizes the team that best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST.

Dean Kamen, the physicist and engineer who invented the Segway scooter, founded FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) in 1989 to spark the interest of American students in learning science and math skills.

In FIRST Robotics Competition, high school students and technical mentors work as a team to design and build a robot that solves a problem using a common ``kit of parts'' and a standard set of rules.

If only the Mercury knew exactly how huge the Chairman's Award is... *sigh*

Someday FIRST will get the coverage it deserves.

The Merc was at our meeting today doing interviews for a bigger article sometime later in the week. They put that one out on pretty short notice, so it doesn't have any detail.
