How do I save a quicktime .mov file?

I want to save a quicktime movie file locally, namely for example:

THIS ONE

It's embedded into the webpage. I found the actual hyperlink directly to the movie file, and opened it in Quicktime media player, but alas, there was no "Save As" option available to me?!?!?

Anyone know of any feasible way to save a QT .mov file like this particular one?

I even tried opening it in WMP, with no luck at all...

Oh, and watch the movie if you feel like it. It is really cool, hence why I want to save it locally.

Re: How do I save a quicktime .mov file?

You could make an HTML file on your home computer with a link to the movie file, and then, in your browser, right click and use the Save As function.

Most of the time, when I have the link to something I want to download, I use the program "wget" for linux, but I'm not sure how available that is to you.

You have to view the source of the website. Find where the movie file is actually stored on the web server. Then create a link to it in a regular HTML file. Then right click your link, and choose "Save Target as".

I did that for you though. Here's your link: http://www.blur.com/quicktime/480x360/rockfish_480.mov.

Re: How do I save a quicktime .mov file?

^ Or what they said ^

Use this URL

http://www.blur.com/quicktime/480x360/rockfish_480.mov

Then open the Quicktime movie player on your PC and do an "open url."

Paste in that URL and then save as.

As others have suggested, save this code to a file with the extension .htm or .html. Just place your link on the "href=" line, save it and then open it up in your browser.

Code:
<html>
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type"
content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
<title>Get That Web File</title>
</head>
<body bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
<p><a
href="http://www.blur.com/quicktime/480x360/rockfish_480.mov">Right-click here
</a></p>
</body>
</html>

Re: How do I save a quicktime .mov file?

Bah! Make a web-page and then use that to download the file. Sure, it'll work, but there's a more elegant way ... I just can't resist:

Code:
# get_movie.pl
use LWP::Simple;
$movie_file = $ARGV[0] || "http://some.site/foo.mov";
$download_name = $ARGV[1] || "mov01.mov";
$movie_content = get($movie_file);

open(MOVIE,">//path//to//your//favored//download//directory//" . $download_name);
binmode MOVIE;
print MOVIE $movie_content;
# note that code is untested
# and you should always use warnings/strict!
Now you have a solution that'll work as many times as need be. Just type in movie.pl movie_url_address foo.mov and voila. No need for a two-step process once the script is done. Overkill? ... I think not!

What I do is open up the file in the quicktime player and export it.

The problem is that not everyone has (or wants to have) Perl installed on their computer. Everyone who has access to CD, on the other hand, has a web browser installed.

Also, that rockfish thing is pretty cool. Thanks for having this problem, Elgin!

Well, that just identifies a more serious problem than not being able to save a movie file, no? A problem quickly remedied, however. And recognizing that my solution might not be too widely used, I offer it to at least demonstrate that TMTOWTDI*. (Granted, there're some ways to convert a perl file into an executable that can run even without having the perl interpreter installed; probably too much trouble than it's worth though. )

* There's more than one way to do it. Coincientally enough, the motto of perl.

Hehe. Just joking at this point. I once heard a response to this statement, and it went something like this:
"There is only one way to do it, and that is in C.
Learn C, you hippies!"

I apologize if this sounds offensive. I posted this in purely a humorous intention. I consider myself a hippie, too.

Re: How do I save a quicktime .mov file? HELP!

Hey guys,

I tried all the methods you said - but i still can't download the movie. In fact, it's off of a secure website (you know like before i access the page it says all that "this website is secure blah blah do you wish to continue?").

Does this mean that it's impossible to download the .mov then?

- Lance.

Right click the link above and "save as" or whatever the equivalent is on your type of computer/OS/Browser.
