DJ, it's an opinion...

For some people, bad lyrics can ruin really good music. For some people, the other way around. And then there are some of us who are just really picky about it all.

Now, my opinion:

Nirvana.....they didn't play great music. I love the group, I love their music, but the music itself is not that great. I don't think Nirvana was great for their music, or their lyrics. What makes the group great is that they were inventive in what they did. They were one of the bands that helped *HELPED* start the grudge scene. I've never believed that any band that uses 3 power cords for each song to be one of the bands that have quality music.

Just my $.02

1- I like Rock [I don't care if it's hard or if it's "classic stuff" out of the 80's] / Alternative / some pop'y stuff, which BNL is apparently considered.

2- currently I'm way into Puddle of Mudd, Sum 41, AAF, and I'm still into BNL, old aerosmith stuff, Counting Crows, and U2. [I tend to like anyone that does a good concert, that I've been to, for quite a while.]

3- bass, been playing it for six years.

4- c RAP and COUNTRY

5- any boy band, any frickin' rap "musician" [aka. professional swearing technician], and any bubble-gum-pop singer [Spear Brittany, Christina Hair-needs-to-strangulara, ect...]

Dood,

Why are you making such a harsh generalization? Are you generalizing all of that type of music into one category of "rap"? I think if you look into the scene a little, you would find that not all hip-hop artists are "professional swearing technicians" as you so kindly put it. You'll find out that there is a lot that that swears LESS then our "beloved" rock groups like Limp Bizquick and Puddle of Mudd. That, and a lot of these hip-hop artists have a lot more to say about real things then most popular bands.

Even popular, not hard to find groups like Outkast are great examples of this. I'd say they swear a ton less then Fred Durst or any of his projects, and they have a lot to say in some of their songs.

How about really trying out music before you make harsh judgements about it?

Look into some experimental groups like Herbaliser that mix a more classical music style (ex: Blues & Soul) in with a hip-hop beat.

The bands I don't like, I don't like for a purpose ... most of them are just out to make money. A lot of them are boy bands, just dressed up in hard rocker clothes and written hard rock songs, all they do is perform them. Many of them leach off of others who have had success, just getting deals because they're relatives or just leaching on to someone else's name to get known.

And I don't just focus on rap for this. Country isn't something that should be generalized either. I don't like pop-country, or most of the new popular stuff, but boy, you stick me in a car with some Bluegrass, and YEEHAW.

I guess I'm just tryin to say that we shouldn't stereotype music just because it has a general sound to it. Yes, I have a hard time not doing this myself, but I think we need to try...

1) Right now Rock or Dance/Techno
2) Too many to choose from but STYX and Rob Zombie are both at the top of the list (Oh yeah and a little band called Tripset started from a Team 237 Robotics Fundraiser!)
3) Not being able to play anything personally except the "Air" Guitar; I'll have to go with the Guitar
4) cRAP and Hip-Hop (Most of it anyways) Nelly, Outkast and a few others are ok. Question: When did MTV turn into B.E.T.?
Side Note: I actually like some teeny bopper stuff better than most rap, I actually can stand watching Brittany more than I can stand most Rap; well with the tv on mute that is (Good ol' Eye Candy
5) It's not technically a band but a crappy voiced musician, Ja Rule. I laughed so hard when he got dissed by them two girls in The Fast and the Furious!!

1. Blues, because of the pure emotion, the improvisation, and
the musical craftsmanship.

Rock and roll for the attitude and power (mainly classic rock)

Country (classic and Texan) for the sound, the laid-back feel,
for steel guitars and harmonicas, for musicians who don't
take themselves seriously and have a good time

Funk, Techno, other - Artists and songs can strike my fancy at any time without my prior knowledge or participation: see Nikka
Costa and Eagle Eye Cherry

2. Cake, BB King, Robert Earl Keen, Eric Clapton (old stuff), Monte
Montgomery, John Lee Hooker, Hank III (that's a new one),
Rolling Stones, Guess Who, Pink Floyd, Green Day, Squirrel
Nut Zippers, Sinatra, Garth Brooks, Propellerheads

3. I can barely play harmonica, but BB King's guitar is my favorite
instrument.

4. I have little patience for super-poppy stuff. Boy and girl bands
and the like, but there are exceptions to every rule.

5. For some reason, I like Van Halen less than any other white
American male between the ages of 18 and 35. That isn't to
say that I won't sing along if their song comes on the radio,
I'll just be wishing it was something else.

Here's the deal on Country music, for those of you that are looking for a scoop: I started listening to Country in Jr. HS, but after 4 years, I discovered that it all sounded the same. I couldn't tell one band from another, save for a few exceptions. So I quit listening to country and broadened my musical horizons.

After college, though, I moved to Texas - and lo and behold -found a completely new style of country music that I'd never heard before! If anyone likes country, but is tired of the same old thing, or doesn't like country, but has an open mind, seek ye out Robert Earl Keen. You'll be glad you did.

ok, ok, ok...

I'm sorry about being steriotypical! I was just in a bad mood. [it's the end of the marking period and I am seriously stressed out!]

I DO happen to see a difference between hip-hop and rap. It might not be the generaly accepted definitions but oh well.

I see rap -in my general opinion- as songs that contain lyrics full of swear words and contain degrading views towards women. Hip-hop -in my general opinion- does not.

------
I listen to lots of music, thank you. And I happen to believe that I don't pre-judge on music without listening to it first. For example, I've never heard of Herbalizer. So I can not comment on that band. But have you heard of Antigone Riseing, or Fear Of Zero?
------

In this post, as in many music stores, musical groups are classified into rough overall groups; such as Country, Classical, Rock, or Rap. I happen to dislike many rap bands due to their degrading views towards women, and the tendancy to swear a lot; thus my prior response.

As for country, the basic vibes and lyrics of most country songs just do not appeal to me.

I never said that I disliked all rap or country. The original post asked which was your least fav. music type. I happen to like Kirk Franklin, Will Smith, and a few other rappers. But they do not overrule my love of the other types of music.

-ducky-

Boy Bands arent

I would like too add that boy bands, arent even bands. Wither are rap singers, there not bands!!!!

Why cant people say that groups or singers. They are not bands.

Especially Boy "Bands" who do not deserve the priviledge of getting that title.
