Re: Canada's Wonderland Results

Congrats to all the participants. Maybe 639'll be there next year.

Could someone post up videos of the Wonderland event?

Keep up the "good" work, Karthik. We need your "angelic" voice in top form for the IRI Talent Show.

I would like to thank all of the people that volunteered to help at our 1st off season event. Special thanks to all from Team 48 who graciously gave of their time and came to our event.

A special thanks also to Karthik who made me seem like a genius with the picking of winners during the skills event. By the end all of the teams were asking him to pick their opponents rather than jinx them. It was a fun time and I had a blast interacting with everyone. It was nice being at an event with less pressure.
The four of us from Team 48 who were there at Canada's Wonderland all had a great time. I personally had the fun job of operating the scoring software for most of the competition. Thank you to Rick Petty and Eric Rasmussen from FIRST for showing me how to use such a powerful yet user-friendly system. I now have a greater respect and understanding for how much work went into its development.

As far as the competition goes, I had a great view of the action going on throughout the day - the Battle of the Biggest Mouths in Canada was captivating as Karthik and Steve W. entertained everyone all day! Props to Karthik for only tripping over the field boundary twice during his inaugural MC effort. Props to Steve for taking time out of his busy schedule pimping Canada's Wonderland T-shirts (to his credit, they sold out) to stop by the Scorer's Table and announce the match results once in awhile! Seriously, Karthik, you didn't act like a rookie MC and Steve, you were as professional and as exciting as ever. Both of you did an amazing job and I'm glad I was there to witness your antics firsthand - yes, even Karthik's singing.

Oh yeah, there was a robotics competition on Saturday, too - 190 was as good as advertized, 1241 was a scoring machine, 188 relentlessly pursued their objectives on the field, and 1114 proved once again they were one of the elite teams in 2004. The match rotation was so fast on Saturday - I gotta give credit to all the pit crews who kept those bots running strong match after match. Great job to everyone who participated.

Special thanks to Mark Breadner for organizing the event and for finding places for four 48 geeks who wanted to come up and volunteer. Thanks also to Canada's Wonderland for providing the excellent venue for the event - you were wonderful hosts. Team 48 hopes to see everyone at CW next year, hopefully with a robot in tow.

I think it was - being compared to John Candy is a flattering proposition. But perhaps I exaggerated? Maybe I meant to say "the Battle of the Biggest Mouths in Canada's Wonderland at the Kingswood Theatre on June 5, 2004"?

We (Amanda and I) were actually questioned for a longer period of time going into Canada than coming back in to the US. They didn't even ask for proof of ID getting back in .. which is completly opposite of how it has been the past few times I've been over to Canada.

Thank you to Mark for everything I know that everyone on the team had a great time. We had such a good time that some members can barely talk for cheering so much. Also thank you to our alliance partners 107 and 1310.

Haha, when our team crossed back into the USA after the Canadian Super Regional... one of our engineers had already crossed in his car and talked to the border guy about our success. Then our bus got there and we were all still ecstatic. I told the inspector my passport was under the bus when he asked for it (which it was and I forgot to get it earlier) but the guy just smiled and said, "well these guys can vouch for you" (the ones yelling behind me "This is our driver! We can vouch for him!"). The inspector seemed pretty enthusiastic about a USA team winning in Canada (lol) and we spent the majority of the time talking about FIRST and what it is. The border inspection was the simplest I've ever experienced (what are you doing Homeland Security?!?!?!). When I got home, my parents and sister said they got inspected by the same guy and was happy to tell the guy I was his son, the one without the passport. So my parents got by in a flash too. So much for border security
