FIRST Video Game: Sound Effects

we still have much debating to do before we begin the real programming of this thing, but sound effects are somethign we can start right now. who wants to record some sounds to possibly be put in the game? we could use things like:

motor sounds for the various motors
cheering
balls bouncing
banging, clanging, crashing, etc.
skidding

and if somebody could get a hold of the official field sound effects (charge, buzzer, bowling pins, etc.) that would be awsome. those sound effects are a must.

I might be able to extract them from some clips we have of the event. Would that be good?

i suppose you'd have to talk to somebody at nasa to get the official field sounds, being that they take care of the fields. maybe mike wade or dave lavery?

Definetly authentic field sounds are needed. What would this years game be without that joyus ball drop clunking.

Re: FIRST Video Game: Sound Effects

As far as the sounds go, I think we have 2 options:
1. Make all the sounds (anouncers) the same and include specifics in robot files, game files, etc.
2. Make all the sound effects generic and put them in the field files.

Either way, it sucks.

or three:
3. include a voice synthisizer.

You could use Microsoft SAM or something and record voices.. anyone with a clear throat's voice can be used, it will look good.

Mike Wade is only incharge of the Nasa Field which a few groups use, FIRST is the one who is in charge of the Main fields that most off seasons and all Regionals use. The Nasa Field is the one that was at the championship as the practice field in the pits... I will ask a few people as i am scorekeeping again this weekend and see if
  1. i can get ahold of the sounds
    ...And ...
  2. if the sounds are allowed to be used for this item

So i dont know what FIRST will say about it so i cant promise you anything, but i will definitly try and get the sound effects from the software for you.

This actually would be cool. And it would sound any worse than some of the cheaper sound systems there were.

Are you volunteering to create some magic smoke and record it?

Re: FIRST Video Game: Sound Effects

You could get a bunch of good sound effects from SOAP 108s videos, also alot of the TV shows add in soud effects but they fit. Dave Lavery had some good ones in his animation this year too.

It wouldn't be that hard. EA Sports Video game announcers only have like 10 phrases they use over and over again, but they say the name of each team and then just combine the team name with the phrase.

like "The Colts" "gained big yards on that play"

or general stuff like "This guy has an awesome glove and is one of the best players in the league"
