Re: Your Funniest FIRST Experience

I'm fairly certain that if the Atlanta Hotels Sydicate ever finds this thread, we're finished gentlemen. That being said I'll add my own fond reccollections from this, my rookie year:

1) One day sitting in the shop, we we're discussing some hairbrained scheme that required a 9v battery with low internal resistance. Let's watch...

Teammate: What we need is a really 9v battery that can handle a helluva lot of amperage draw.

Me: Like a car battery or something. But that would be a really weird car battery...

Teammate: *chuckles* Yeah, like a russian car battery!

Me: In Soviet Russia, Battery is limited by YOUR INTERNAL RESISTANCE!!!

Everyone in Earshot: Muhahaha!

2) Well, the contest for funniest moment in this last build season is 0wned by: When Robots Attack!!!

Seriously, check out that link :-)

Re: Your Funniest FIRST Experience

Probably the funniest experience I had was playing Taboo with 433. It was Bryan (our driver), Phil (our now-alumni arm driver--when we had an arm), and myself, plus about five Firebirds. We went from the team social until some odd hour, when Phil split. Then all of us pretty much split.

That was pretty funny. No programmer should have to exert that much physical activity. We weren't designed for it.

Re: Your Funniest FIRST Experience

At nationals in 2002, 2 of my teammates and myself walked around the three All Star Hotels attempting to find some guy that would do the truffle shuffle (from the Goonies) for us. Needless to say, no guy would do that. We had some really sad attempts from some of the boys from "chicago" on the floor above us. But we did get some "Canadian" Mountain Dew out of it.

At KSC in 2002 we had some fun with one of the girls on our team who was dirty. Needless to say, she was forced to become clean afterwards.

Re: Your Funniest FIRST Experience

On thursday night of regionals pit and flight go out for dinner. At the Richmond regional after a long, hard day in the pit we decided to get Arby's sandwhiches for dinner. Heidi and I ordered the same thing, but her sandwhich came with sauce on it even tho we both asked them to take it off. Dave took this as a great chance to explain to us the 'theory of sauce relativity'. He spent a good 5 minutes explaining to me that before it could have less sauce my sandwhich had to first reach 'sauce equillibrium'. We still joke about it, he even gave me demonstrations with sauce packets. All I wanted to do was eat my sandwhich.

That whole dinner was hilarious. And the "theory of sauce relativity" really did make sense, in a Dave sort of way.

I don't really know what my funniest experience is, there have been so many good ones. The whole Dave says "That's Pimp!" thing is high on the list, and bowling after dinner at Arbys and the game we played during bowling, the Kyle contest... Of course, also very funny was the "adults" taping The Crocodile to Dave's door... Dave opened his door before they could put the note on it that said "I'm yours for the night." Don't ask about the crocodile, it's just wrong. Very wrong.

Re: Your Funniest FIRST Experience

FIRST is great, i've had a ton of fun experiences, and a lot of them were funny.

Last year, at nationals, I wrote down 2 1/2 pages of totally random quotes. Reading them back to people and just watching thier faces as i read them was just hilarious. And since all the quotes were random and about different things no body really knew what they were about. i still have them, and if i ever just want a laugh i go and read through them again.

This year, at the UCF regional, i got stuck in a life preserver. Kind of a long story, but i won't get into it here. And Brittany and I jumped in the pool with clothes on, just because somebody said we wouldn't do it. It was really funny thinking back on it. We went around to different peoples rooms and they were all laughing at us. and it was kinda windy, so that made it kinda cold out.

I have so many more funny experiences, but i can't really say i have one imparticular that was the funniest... except maybe when Barry, tiff, and I went down the escalators when barry wrote on his hand that he didn't wash them. that was absolutely hilarious. That's it for the time being, but i'll come back and post again if i think of something even funnier.

Re: Your Funniest FIRST Experience

During the build season, while me and my friend Bharat (Teknobrahma) were trying to program the arm, he put a program in and the arm started spinning around and around. Mr. Cokeley said "we at least it's moving" and Bharat said "But... it's not actually programmed to move yet!" I have that as one of my away messages on AOL now, i love that quote so much.

That reminds me. All through the SoCal competition this year, we were trying to get our arm working. (OK, we were building the arm) But we could never get the arm to work, no matter what I did with the programming, the motors wouldn't turn on. But then when i took the bot out onto the field and turned it on, the arm started working! But It was on constant reverse and was pulling it into itself, so I had to tear out the PWM before it destroyed itself! But we still never got the arm to work after that.

while we were trying to figure out how to make the prototype arm work, and it kept spinning aroudn in the same direction, it eventually jammed the pot and unscrewed itself from it. we were programming for a couple hours before we noticed

Oh dear, last-evening dinner at Dave's, us all [me, sean, dave, and our new captain kyle] trying to explain the theory of sauce relativity to Dave's youngest son. It got brought up all evening long.

And the line of the night... 'Its all relative'

Re: Your Funniest FIRST Experience

After West Michigan this year, we went out to applebees. I just so happened to have some buttons with me. We asked our waitress if she wanted a Piece of Flair like in the movie Office Space. She was so so confused and it was pretty funny in that situational comedy kind of way.

The second funniest thing is when after Detorit Regional we rocked a bus.
We borrow a bus from a local bussinessman. After Detorit we began to rock the bus at a resturant. We lifted the bus off it's wheels. We then pulled up in front of a grocery store where one of our team members works turned on the sound system (thats right sound system) and rocked the thing. The look of the workers was priceless. After that two days latter when the team member was at work they were talking about a group of people rocking a bus. Recently on the way to Grand Rapids regional that bus broke down we don't know if these events are related but that wouldn't be suprising for how far we rocked that thing

Re: Your Funniest FIRST Experience

'05 Buckeye Regionals.
After seeing our poor performance during practice matches, our teams 2 lead mentors decided to put me in the position of on field coach. One thing i noticed was the lack of a nice simple way to indicate to the HP that it was safe to head out to the bot.
On the drive home i was thinking about various arm motions that wouldn't be easily confused. I was thinking of gestures airport linemen use to communicate to the pilot when i came up with crossed forearms to indicate don't go, parallel forearms to go.
I did this a few times at the stoplight with this look of great joy on my face that i found something so simple yet so perfect (Hey, i was TIRED!) when i glanced over to the car next to me to see the driver giving me the "$@#$@#$@#$@# your CRAZY" look.

In any case, this simple arm motion worked great, and ended up becoming sorta a team high five.

I also screwed up the YMCA the first time when me and the HP ran out to the YMCA line in front of the field during the field malfunction at Buckey on Sunday. i also led a conga line around the field with our teams flag, but those were more personal funny moments!
