A unicycle is a good way to get to know your friends better. Because your friends will want to ride it, and it takes time and hard work to learn. Time and hard work strengthen friendships. You would certainly let a friend ride a segway, but really anyone who can walk can ride a segway, so there would not be that bonding time.

Lastly, a good learning unicycle is affordable. Maybe $80-$90, and you really don't have to upgrade. For a better one you can spend about $200, for the best (which are insanely durable) $500-$1000



I'll probably be commuting to school next year on unicycle. I couldn't do it this year because I had to drive our exchange student to school too.

WELLL!!! Um... you... err... DON'T GET A WEGGIE ON A SEGWAY LIKE YOU DO ON A UNICYCLE!!!

i must say this is funny to look at--- yeah unicyles never rode one but that's okay-- segway haven't had the chance yet either but whatever one day i shall-- it's all good

Well, I stuck glowsticks on it during a parade and also wired it with christmas lights. Here's a site where you can see stuff that has been done with and while unicycling

I have something I've always been wondering about a uni-cycle. How do you learn how to ride it without killing yourself?...they look like falling off them repeatedly would not feel too good.

The best way, in my opinion is to find a place where you can support yourself from both sides, like a hallway or in my case, a kitchen island (my mom hated the carpet and hoped I would destroy it). If the uni comes out, catch yourself with your hands that have been touching the walls/counters. Balance will come with time. But eventually you're going to have to risk the crashes and head out in the open. Most of the time you land on your feet (called a UPD, UnPlanned Dismount), but don't be discouraged even if you fall. Another good way is to use two friends as mobile crutches, one on either side of you.

Anyone who bothers to read this should try unicycling! As a marine on the unicyclist.org forum says, "My unis are smile machines". There is just something cool about unicycling, almost elemental in nature.

I ABSOLUTELY have to agree!! A unicycle is a way to show some real uniqueness and to demonstrate to people that you have interest in things that are not seen as common, popular, or "in". I think everyone is too busy trying to go after the things that everyone likes or "approve" of (the brand new and modern things -- not really saying that they are bad), but they don't spend any real time trying to get involved in "out dated" things to see if they might even like it. Tsk* Tsk* Tsk* Shame on you

Secondly, it is definetly healthier. I mean America is turning into a nation of lazy couch potatoes or computer potatoes for that matter. I ask you: is it enough to just stand on a two-wheeled cart that basically carries your lazy behind everywhere? I don't think so ... what happened to the good-ole' walking or running, to get around? But seriously, at least riding a traditional unicycle is much more health friendly ... excercise leg muscles and improve your balance ... maybe we should all start worrying about the health problem.

A beginner doesn't usually "fall off" a unicycle. Most of the time, as soon as you lose your balance, the uni kind of squirts out from under you like a watermelon seed and you suddenly find yourself standing on the ground.

(Unless you're trying to ride one with a chain and an extra high seat, that is, in which case knee pads and a helmet -- and maybe the suggested bubble-wrap suit -- are definitely a good idea.)

It is also a good idea to wear pads and helmet when you are doing any technical riding, be it street, trials or muni. I of course never wear pads because I have none, and only wear a helmet when I need to set a good example.
