Re: IRI Mentor Round?

I thought it was great because it was fun to watch our mentors operate the machine. They were definatly fun to watch. Now some of mentors know what its like being an opperator.

My first post. Yay!

[quote=David Kelly]Same for me. I'll be in Hawaii that weekend (and week before or after) to meet all my other side of the family (my mom's side) and have a family reunion with all my native Hawaiian family members. I will be very very said if I wouldnt be able to make all of both of these events.

Oh. sorry David. We already have the venue booked. That was the only weekend available. Guess you'll have to miss it next year.

(everyone else - I'm just kidding David, we don't have a date yet = but don't tell him!)

Re: IRI Mentor Round?

I am one of the mentors that drove, and afterwards, I gave our driver a very long "bow" as I "wasn't worthy" of driving. I had a lot of fun, and am amazed that the kids do it everytime and in our case do really well! I second or third or what ever number we are on now to keep the mentor round. It was probably the most fun I as a mentor had at IRI. That could have also been the case because I was asleep in the RV for most of our matches after driving 26 hours to get to Indy

Re: IRI Mentor Round?

Mentor rounds were awesome. I was the driver for the "big laundry basket" and have a MUCH greater respect for what our drivers go through on the field. It's easy driving the robot around in the Tech Center at school - it's a whole different animal when other teams are beating up on you!

IRI should definitely keep the mentor match! What a blast!!

Re: IRI Mentor Round?

I thought the mentor rounds were a great idea. As the driver for 980, I must say that I felt the pressure, but of course, that helped to make it exciting. For sure, we mentors now have more understanding of what the drive teams are dealing with. So many thanks to whoever came up with the idea.

My vote would be to make it a permanent addition.

I loved the mentor round. Even though we almost knocked our arm off like 5 times. We could have done better if our mentor drive team had more practice. But overall I would like to see that next year, just in off-season events though.

Arrow Re: IRI Mentor Round?

For the sake of saying it... I'll say that I too thought this was a lot of fun as a mentor.

However, I do know that 461 had a heck of a time coming up with 3 mentors who were older than 21... it pretty much narrowed it down to the only 3 mentors we have above 21.

But overall, I loved it. I came to the conclussion that driving isn't difficult, but it just takes practice, kinda like jumping rope or drilling a hole within ±0.005. It definitely made me want to encourage 461 to get our machine done sooner for more driver practice.

I don't think this sort of thing could ever be a bad thing for FIRST. I think on some levels, it wouldn't be a bad thing for the official competition... anybody agree?

Matt

Re: IRI Mentor Round?

I think it's an excellent idea! I'm not part of one of the teams that competes in IRI, but I really like that idea. Rock on!
At the MD State Fair, they had kids control the robots...too cool to see the kids doing it! They were so cute..
But anyways, make that a tradition! It's a good idea.
