Re: 2005 Regionals

Thats probably it, because i remembered hearing talks of NJ possibly becoming a Super Regional. So i guess to take away from that they made LI the same time.
You've got to remeber that there are actually four regionals within a close radius. New York City, SPBLI, UTC, and the New Jersey regional are all within a close area. So yeah it's probably always been like this for at least three years.
Quote:
Is it just me-or is it kind of pointless to hold 2 regionals within 50 miles of each other on the same weekend? One or the other is gonna go wayy down in attendence.
I remeber that they held SPBLI and the NYC regional on the same week so it's probably not the reason why. The team map shows it's possible to support three regionals going at once in the same area.

Re: 2005 Regionals

sorry to be all mean and mad and stuff... but... BOO NEW REGIONALS!!! i mean, i guess its good that First is expanding and everything, but its almost like watering out competition, and teams and matches that may have happened, that made UTC so great, this year IMO, but sadly it only had 36 teams. If there was a way to up that # isntead of kill it down, i think it would make things like Regional Champs mean more. but like i said i guess the expansion is a good thing.

*edit* also with the upping of the prices to attend competitions, some teams might only be able to attend one, instead of two. so that might also kill attendance.

Somewhere in that mess, I saw you have a point.

As FIRST expands, there will be more teams. These new teams need to compete, this means: more regionals.
Since these new teams are rookies, they (with a few awesome exceptions... Simbots, I'm looking at you) probably aren't as good as the "veterans". What does this mean?

The competitions will see "watered down". That is, you have to look a little harder to find a "stang-class" robot. Will they be any less exciting? Maybe, for a little while....

Here's the kicker: In 5 years, all these "rookies" we've got now, will be up to par with the "Chief Delphi"s of the world... then what?

You got it folks, it'll be a whole new world.

Expansion of FIRST is good because it exposes more students to the INCREDIBLE virtues of this program. Expansion is bad for FIRST because, it becomes more difficult to continue to provide an experience at the same level of previous years. FIRST is growing, and experiencing some growing pains, but overall..... expansion is a good thing. Sky's the limit.
FIRST ROCKS! Seriously.

Did you have any less fun this year at BAE then in previous years? Were the finals at UTC any less exciting than previous years? Heck no!
Did winning UTC mean less this year? Of course not.

FIRST is great, and it's only going to get better.
Especially with all the great people who are already involved, working their butts off to MAKE it better.

I'm excited for the future, and you should be too.

Re: 2005 Regionals

my only objection to these new regionals that as all of those who already figured out the logistics of it, many things that occur during the First season like Florida teams going to to the Midwestern and Eastern teams going to So cal and so cal teams doing up to North West Regionals and etc. it seem the timing for all these regionals is horrible as its messing around with the diversity of team attendance across the board at the regionals by changing what options they have on what weekend.

First off, the regional schedule is completely unofficial. Secondly, there are a very large amount of factors when come into play when creating a regional schedule. Many people from all over North America work in conjunction to put one together. They try their best to accommodate the needs of all parties, and do an amazing job. But with almost 1000 teams, 30 cities and venues, it isn't going to be possible to please everyone.

So before you go out and start criticizing, just take a moment to step back and look at the bigger picture.

I have to agree with J to the Vizzle, but for a different reason.

I'm willing to bet that teams around regional sites wouldn't be in FIRST if it weren't for that regional springing up. I don't know if that's the story of 1293--maybe I'll ask about that sometime. But if we don't get regionals out there to show off what we've got to people, it'll be like a tree falling in the woods with nobody around to hear it. And unlike that classic question, this time it won't make a sound!

Re: 2005 Regionals

Some FRC Statistics:
For 2004, 929 registered FRC Teams competed in 26 regional with a capacity of 1209 spots. All spots were taken.

280 (1209- 929) spots were taken by teams going to their 2nd and 3rd regional.

The championship had 292 spots. Therefore only 31% of the 2004 teams were able to attend the championship in Atlanta.

**********************************************
For 2005, FIRST anticipates 1100 FRC Teams to compete in 30 regional with a capacity of 1380 (estimated).

280 (1380-1100) spots will be taken by teams going to their 2nd and 3rd regional.

The championship will have 292 (estimated) spots. Therefore only 26% of the 2005 teams will be able to attend the championship in Atlanta.

Dates of 2005 Regionals ?

Hey everybody-

I know that FIRST hasn't announced them yet but do any of you kave the dates for the various regionals this coming season? I need to make an agenda for the season to submit to administration. I am especially interested in the events on the east coast since they are within reach of my team.

I can tell you that the NJ Regional is march 17-19, 2005

Re: 2005 Regionals

Another problem why all the compeitions are close together, atleast in the Northeast, if I'm not mistaken BAE is at Contnetal Arena, UTC is at the CTnow.com Meadows Music Theatre (don't know about NYC or LI).. Those are two major facilities. In Hartford the only places are the Civic Center, which FIRST has to compete with UConn Huskies and Hartford Wolfpack to use, and the meadowlands is a major concert arena that gets some big names to sing there, so FIRST has to work around that. Contnental Arena has to work around the NETs and the Devils. Plus around the country thats NCAA Tournament time at a lot of major buildings. The timeing for these compeitions have major compeitions with facilities between the NBA, NHL, and NCAA all happening at the same time. But with all these new regionals I can see teams leaving the difficult New England/NY/NJ area. Our team is probably an average team in New England but a pretty good team elsewhere. I think a lot of teams might see it that way and a team that would compete in UTC may use the thinking "Why try to beat 175, 176, 177, 157, 237, 782, 228? When we could go to the midwest and compete with teams with a lot less exprience than those guys." I think for the next few years that might also be a reason why competion might go down a little bit.. but thats my opinion which usually isn't right.

Re: 2005 Regionals

You might want to be careful about going to the Midwest looking for teams with less experience...(thinks of 234, 47, 71, 111...)

I still believe that the South will rise again--or for once? I'm not sure.
