Photography

Hey, this is a question for all of the photojournalists out there like me. This will be my 3rd year as a journalistic writer and photographer, and looks like I may be taking the leap from SLR to Digital soon. I will be attending a brand new school this year, and as a new school, they have new equipment, and are wanting to start off completely digital. However, the cameras they have right now are all 3.2 megapixles without very good zooming capabilities. I'd say the cameras will be okay for hallway pics, but I am an sports photographer and need to capture the action and keep a good quality. I am in search of a good camera to suggest for the new yearbook to get. here is what I am after
1. Ability to switch from close up to telephoto lens
2. More megapixles (between 4.0-6.5)
3. little to no shutter lag
4. reasonably priced
5. at least up to 1/2000 sec shutter

those are the main features I can think of right now. Last year I used the Canon Rebel EO5, so the digital rebel is in mind right now. I am not sure what my budget is really, but I'm hoping they'll let me have $800-$1500. I am the only experienced person on staff right now, and looks like I may have to be editor if I want it to be any good at all.... just hope this doesn't take away from robotics which I now consider more important. After all, first things FIRST.

The other choices I am considering are the Nikon D70 or the D100

Thanks for your help

Re: Photography

A guy at work has the Sony DSC F828 and enjoys it. I saw it up close once and was intrigued. I can't say much about how well it works or anything, but it looked like it was something to consider. (It's a bit pricey, though)

Re: Photography

If you need interchangeable lens the choices are limited to the Olympus and the Nikon's. If you have not handled the Olympus, I would find one and hold it first. The body is plastic and feels cheap. I don't know how it will hold up to abuse.
Shutter lag is going to be the big problem with any digital camera. I believe they all offer a burst mode that will get you around it.
I have a Nikon F series that I bought decades ago and it really held up well. I purchased a Nikon 5700 just before Nationals and am quite pleased with it.

So no more getting run over by football players while taking pics on the sidelines huh? Yeah, that happened to me last year, right in front of the band...that is now known as "Pulling a Barry."

Re: Photography

Sounds like you want a film camera.
I'm only a photographer as a light hobby, but I do know one thing: What you just described are the primary reasons why to stick with a film cam. (I believe I heard once that film has the equivalent of 27 Mpixels)

Photojournalism

I would like to stick with 35mm myself if it were my choice, but it isn't. The fact is that 35mm will eventually go extinct, and darkrooms already have. If I can get my school to get me a $1000, I'm sure not complaining. I know 35mm still has better quality for the buck, and the other cameras the school has (3.2 megapixle) isn't going to do it. However, gotta give credit to cameras that let you see your pic right after you take it. No more taking a nighttime football pics and wondering if it will come out or not. I don't mind the switch if its not coming out of my pocket, just better not take away from the robotics fund. By the way, thanks to everyone for your suggestions, I am researching all of them.
