Race Track on Staten Island = FIRST ?

This really isn't a Rumor more or less a suggestion.

Staten Island NYC isn't known for much things except its Robotics High Schools and High School Sports. Nascar is considering on building A Race track on the island to hold their events such as the Nextel Cup / Bush Series Races. After the track is built a wide variety of things can happen at that track and one of them could be a FIRST Competition. Not saying it should or it will but wouldn't it be great to have a Competition at a big venue such as a race track, Right Now NYC Regional holds 33 teams strong why not up the amount of teams that register for this competition to around 60+ They'll be plenty of parking and the main attraction the SI Mall manages to attract people of all ages from neighboring states. This track is years off from being built but just a thought with a venue that will hold at least thousands of people per race maybe just maybe FIRST can also get a hand in it as well. The only Downside is that it will be a Open Stadium === Not enclosed from the weather at all....... It will be another Florida Competition with the subtraction of WDW but Six Flags / Dorney Park / Hershey Park just a couple of miles away.

What Do You Think? Can It Happen if Nascar Follows through with its plans?

That'd be awesome, except that's about as far north as I am. Unless it's covered, it'd be a no-go because of the difficulting of running robots in rain/show/etc.

Re: Race Track on Staten Island = FIRST ?

Correct me if im wrong, but wasnt the old NYC regional held in a completly open sports stadium, so i dont think weather would be that much of a problem. I think that would be a great place to hold a robotics event at but i also think that there would be some problems holding a robotics competition at a nascar track through out a week and weekend in march/april.

Re: Race Track on Staten Island = FIRST ?

It's a great idea, but in March. in NYC for a regional outside would probably not gain a lot of support. At UTC we had snow on the ground and snow could happen in NYC in March. I'd love to see it happen though but I don't think they'd host a regional.. This track that is being proposed in CT might, (it's indoor) http://www.newenglandraceway.com/

Re: Race Track on Staten Island = FIRST ?

IMHO it won't happen. A track will not be built in the NE area. Nascar is having trouble filling the venues they have now. A few years ago, races were all sold out, now tickets can be had at most tracks on race day.

But not this weekend. Bristol is sold out forever.

The NYC Regional History

2001 & 2002 - Columbia University - Held Indoors
2003 & 2004 - Riverbank State Park - Held Indorrs but traveled outside between pits and Field (less then 10 ft)
