What domain name service do you use?

Hi,

I'm currently running my own server, aside from hosing my team's forums I also host a few other things for myself and friends.

So, I was wondering what domain name service provider do you use? Can you recommend me any? I'm looking one that's cheap, relatively reliable/fast, sub domains, a DNS Panel (allows user to choose server IP, not having to e-mail someone).

Thanks in advance

Re: What domain name service do you use?

Check out
http://www.diywebserver.com/dnsservice.php

They're completely free, and I've used them for a long time without any problems whatsoever. They hosted the DNS for robbayer.com for a long time, and as far as I know, nobody ever had trouble getting to the site.

The signup page seems to be down at the moment, but just wait a few days and give them a try.

I use NameZero for mine. It's got everything I really need for my domain (email and url redirection), so I'm sticking with it.

I don't use this personally, but a friend of mine has had a lot of success with www.redirection.net

I use zonedit http://www.zoneedit.com/ free for personal use and it allows you to update the dns name with a dynamic ip.

I use FreeDNS, but now that GoDaddy includes advanced DNS with their domain names, I really don't need to.

Re: What domain name service do you use?

I also use zoneedit and couldn't be happier. The web interface goes down sometimes but I've never found a problem with the DNS servers.

www.godaddy.com ....name sounds funny, but they have a very cheap/very large domain registration service. Also they have a very large customer base.

Re: What domain name service do you use?

I've heard of ZoneEdit; The ZoneEdit free service and FreeDNS must have a catch to their "free" services. I looked at godaddy and stargate, my friends have used them previously, so I'm guessing that they're somewhat good, they got good prices and a DNS panel (which should be good, since I'm under dynamic IP).

Thanks for the help everyone =)

The problem with the GoDaddy DNS panel is that there is no way to automatically update it when your IP changes. FreeDNS can update your records with a single URL (which you can fetch with a scheduled task or chron job, or use a program such as FreeDNSupdater), and ZoneEdit probably has something similar.

The ZoneEdit catch is that there is a limit on how much traffic you can generate to the DNS server and how many sub domains you can specify. If you go over the limit, they bill you (although you can cancel instead of paying). However, even moderately busy sites will never generate enough traffic to be billed.

The FreeDNS catch is that it is designed to be a shared DNS, so that people with domains name can allow anyone else to get a sub-domain under it (for example, if I registered sharks.com and used FreeDNS, someone without a domain could get greatwhite.sharks.com and have it point to their web site). You can however mark sites private, which means you have to approve all sub-domains. Also, because it is designed to be shared, you cannot get a wildcard domain. Still, there is no restriction on traffic.

If you donate to FreeDNS, you can get a non-shared stealth domain, which can use wild cards and people won't see at all.

Re: What domain name service do you use?

Well, my IP hasn't changed for a while (almost a year). So GoDaddy does accept Dynamic IP's? DynamicDNS solutions are way too overpriced; Doesn't GoDaddy also have some DNS panel? Which should let me switch the IP if it changes?

No catch that I know of with zone edit... and i have 4 domain's "there" currently. Just don't go over your traffic usage which is something similar to 1000 hits to their DNS server per month. But, because of dns propogation, you should never hit.

GoDaddy can be used with dynamic IPs, but you have to update manually (go to the web site, log in, go to control panel, type in new IP address, etc.).

FreeDNS and ZoneEdit both offer free dynamic DNS solutions that can be updated automatically.
