random encounter with former robotics people

because we didn't have power yesterday, i went to work with my mom (A.C. and lights in her office). I just happened to have been wearing a S.P.A.M. shirt, and i got stopped by two people. One of them started asking me about the quilts we made and asked me if i knew a few people. The other told me that she was an engineer from Pratt & Whitney who was on the team for the first few years. She was surprised to see that our logo was still the super spam symbol, and then she started telling me all these funny stories about George and some other people. We talked for quite a while. It was really cool, and it was all because i didn't have any other clean clothes! but i was just wondering if something like that has happened to anyone else, like if anybody else has random encounters with former robotics people at a completely unexpected place.

Re: random encounter with former robotics people

I was at Bob's Barbershop in Stuart getting my haircut and i happened to wear a S.P.A.M. shirt cause it was the only clean shirt i had left. (lol) While I was waiting, this guy said "I recognize that shirt!" I talked to him for awhile about how the team has changed, how great Fluffy did, and George. Then we continued talking about George and he told me some stories about funny things that George did. Then it was my turn to go up and so the guy left.

This is a true story, and sorry George, I never asked him for his name.

Re: random encounter with former robotics people

At the 2004 Darpa Grand Challenge Trials at California Speedway, I ran into a few people from 968, and a couple guys from other teams as well 116 and 365. Just the other day in one of my college classes, I ran into a girl from my own team that had graduated two years earlier. That was cool.

hey everyone! Yeah i noticed seeing random robotics people around too. Good story by the way 180 rocks and is a pretty large team. Anyway one of our teachers at my school is an alumni he competed in the 1992 first FIRST robotics event. I forgot with which team but yeah it's kinda cool seeing robotics people around or meetings new ones during everyday life.

I went to Trader Joe's this week. A new face at the cashier said, "How was your weekend?" I wasn't in the mood to talk, thought a minute, and said, "It was busy."

As he cashiered he told me he'd been to church and volunteered at an out of the way hospital. Since he was friendly, trying to make a connection, I thought a little more trying to remember my weekend and said, "Saturday we helped my college kid get her first car, and Sunday we were doing robotics, we're parents on the local team, have you heard of us?"

His face lit up, "I was on a robotics team! In San Luis Obispo!" I said, "How cool, I used to live in Morro Bay!" He said, "Where?" I said, "Remember The Machine Shop on the bay? My husband and I used to own it. It's a mini mall now." His face lit up again, "I know where that was."

I was quiet for a moment thinking, "Wait a minute, I don't remember a team in SLO." He smiled and said he says SLO cuz people usually know where that is, and said the team was in Atascadero. My face lit up, "I remember that team!" We talked to them at the So Cal regional letting them know we're rooting for them cuz my stepdaughter lives in the area and we want the robotics' teams to thrive.

Re: random encounter with former robotics people

The other day I was at Loyola Marymount University here in LA. I was talking with a professor there who is helping with some research at work. (College students work cheap!)

We were in one of the labs when I spotted a familiar face. It was the kid who got South High's team started. We talked for a few minutes. The Prof had some good things to say about him later as he had him in a class last year. It was great to see a FIRST alum doing well.

Today i was walkin in my school lolly gaggin around bumpin into people in the hallway mindin my own buisness...and i suddenly bumped into a former member of WildStang, Frank Zurich. We started talking and the first thing he said to me was, Hey your little Courtney that layed in front of me in the team picture at nationals that one year in 2000. I was afraid to talk to him cuz hes a huge football plaer that is now the football coach at my school and plus i thought he would still be mad at me for that one year i ran infront of him in the team picture lol http://www2.wildstang.org/gallery/2...tang_team_pic_2 Frank is the guy laying down on the right giving me a mean look.

After I'd left that day I kicked myself for not inviting him to drop in on our team.

Ran into him again yesterday. Gave him web, phone number, and invited him to kickoff. He was excited! I asked if he'd ever joined chiefdelphi.com cuz I wrote about our encounter. *chuckle* He said no, he'd thought about it before. Maybe he will now.

Re: random encounter with former robotics people

I didnt encounter a former robotics person ... but everyone is somehow linked to robotics .. at my SAT prep class .. there is a guy from 610 on the animation team last year and this year is head of PR ... and my boyfriend, though not in FIRST, is linked to FIRST .. because his school last year had a team ... like i said .. so many people have heard of FIRST .. it is bigger than I thought

Re: random encounter with former robotics people

I was walking back from work (which I have to get pretty dressed up for), and I passed a girl in a 190 shirt. I indroduced myself, and she was really nice, but I think I made her really confused, since Babsonites and Olinites don't normally mix...and theres an even less chance to meet a Babsonite that's a FIRSTer (there's maybe 3 of us out of 1400 students).

But I thought that was really cool

Re: random encounter with former robotics people

A few weeks ago, we got a new resident here in Preston. For some reason, I had my crew shirt on that day. I walk into the lobby, and he's leaning against a podium, and I see his shirt: TEAM 342 in big red and orange letters.

Let's just say the conversation starter was pretty easy. Now to get him on CD.

(nothing like getting FIRSTers out of the Towers, I say.)
