The wedges (and the cutouts on the hub) fit in the spaces between the "spokes" on the wheel. All it does is make a flat surface to mount the wheel to a base or, a sprocket.

See picture here. This one uses the wheel hub (with the sprocket on the opposite side mounted on the open part of the hub). Open part of the hub meaning the side without the flat surface. In this case, the flat surface sits flush to the spoke and the sprocket is mounted on the opposite side.

ok, so basically the wheel is driven by the spokes since it is pushed byt the hub that goes inside the wheel? do i get it right?
