Question Autocad error?!?!

I had a really bad error that occurred with autocad. I was drawing a sketch for my engineering class. All was going well until the command line prompt started acting weird. I would type a letter and the command would happen instantaneously. I would type s and it would save the file. So I figured I entered some weird command that disabled toe command line. Unfortunately, I then realized that I couldn't even draw a window. I then clicked on draw a line and started drawing a line. Oddly enough I couldn't exit out of the command. Clicking on escape would open up the windows start button. Then I just simply closed the program using ctrl alt delete since I was perpetually stuck in that command. So I decide to reopen the file and to my dismay autocad was not reopening. I then discovered that by clicking on that shortcut the file was opening up IE for some odd reason. Even right clicking into properties it showed the IE property bar. Opening the file from within autocad showed the problem still existed. Then eventually the problem disappeared but it was sure dam annoying having to recreate my work. So anyone know what I did so I can ensure I will never do it again?

I really hope not because this is the schools computer Im working with. Perhaps the file itself became corrupted but then why did it start working like normal after a half an hour.

Re: Autocad error?!?!

Instead of just opening the AutoCAD file, open Autocad and then go to File>Recover and then open it that way..

It will tell you what went wrong sometimes.

Re: Autocad error?!?!

Adam,
It sounds more like a computer glitch than an Autocad prob. Although Autocad does have the ability for command line shortcuts, this does not sound like that was the case. As a school computer there may have been some remote control taking place that was interferring with your operation. IT people have a bad habit of carrying on with their work regardless of what may be important to you.

Re: Autocad error?!?!

We've had similar problems with our school computers in files becomming corrupted, mainly when we save them to the school's networked drives. So, we're taken to saving our files on flash drives rather than on the school computers. If that is a viable option for you, you might want to consider it.

Talking Re: Autocad error?!?!

I have never heard of that happening before, when I started reading I was suspecting a rom chip meltdown but now I am not sure. One guaranteed way to determine the problem would be to ask yourself the question "Am I running Windows ME?" If yes, switch your OS.

I do most of the CAD for my team, but (in AutoCAD 2000 and 2002) I have never seen that happen before. The problem could be in your operating system and the interaction between it and the CAD program. I have had problems opening CAD itself in Windows NT before, but nothing that bad.

Re: Autocad error?!?!

Sounds like some sort of right clicking gone bad combined with a mouse control issue. In AutoCAD you can modify the way right clicking works. Either it can be a return, a last command prompt or a shortcut menu. It also has a timed response feature if you set that stuff up. Being a public machine, it wouldn't be hard to go into your mouse hardware settings and create some software setting conflicts that would do a number on AutoCAD's right click options. So I'm guessing your problem would happen only while your mouse was in motion, telling AutoCAD the right click feature was in use. Hence activating a constant "return/enter" thereby running every kestroke immediately. Probably had your command line scrolling the commands over and over as well?
Just a guess, otherwise it's like Al said, just some kind of glich wreaking havoc on the "return/enter" response. I think the fix would be found in your mouse settings/driver setup etc. But like someone said above, a reboot can cure 90% of AutoCAD's ails. Which might have put the settings back the way they would normally initialize.

Re: Autocad error?!?!

It is one of two things, either a source code error in AutoCAD (which if you are using 2002, is very likely because it is a terrible version), or a computer glitch. Sometimes while working, if I type something in the command line, it will overlap onto another command I've typed. It will then cause an error in the command I was trying to do and I have to start the command over again. So my suggestion, if it ever happens again, either close the program and reboot, or just start the file under recovery.
