On Earthlink Dial-up

The cable company said it would cost $7000 to run the cable line to our house - all of a sudden my connection seemed fast enough. I'm thinking about getting satellite internet - anybody know any good ones?

Road Runner through a cable modem to a 802.11g Linksys Wireless Router to an HP Laptop with integrated wireless.

Wow! I'm sure glad I dumped the dial-up a while back!

I'll have to check my speed at school tomorrow. Thanks for the link to the speed test Elgin!!

Mine is at 4430 kbps. This is on K-State network. The network is a little slow at the present moment when everyone in the building is on.

Re: What speed do you surf the net? Take the test!

Whether or not you have an 11Mbps connection (typically wireless) has no effect on your connection speed unless you are running at a T1 or better. Typical broadband modems have a cap around 1.5Mbps so your average network settings will not slow it at all (unless you have a large surplus of computers using your bandwidth).

Remember that wireless has a large tendancy to have a lot of packet loss. Your theoretical maximum speed may be 11 mbps, but rarely is that speed seen.

Microwaves, along with many other common household devices such as cordless phones operate on the same frequencies as wirelss internet. Any such devices will cause packet loss and higher ping times.

I've seen it happen.

Also remember that T1 is only 1.544 mbps -- not much faster than common cable modems on the downstream side.

Tom

Kind of crappy for the dorms here at NC State. I'll try it again sometime in the early morning hours and see how it does.
