Question what do you do with your old bots?

what do you do with your old robots?

we usually put them in a closet, and only bring them out if we need to use them for a demonstration or to look at for design ideas.

our "old" robots

Hey all,

Our team last year had its own little museum in our practice area. sadly this year we moved it. Een though all of the robots have been pretty much pillaged, the chassis is still there for static display.
Soon to come, a museum to be built within the next year in Nashua, we will now have a permanent spot to place our old robots

We brutally ripped apart the drive train of our 2001 robot when we found out that the motor mounts we had the machinist make for the 2002 robot were too short...

...the electronnics followed when we came up short on spikes and speed controllers...

I want to rebuild it, really!

3 year's ago got TOTALLY dismantled
then last year somebody got the impression that the electronics should be taken out of two years ago, but over the summer we rebuilt the base itself and after this season we are going to rebuild it
and Last years is in perfect working order with only minimal repairs being needed.
and We built two Robots this year!! The problem now is the older two are in a back closet (old Dark Room) and there is no more room there, and the one that is the duplicate for this year is in our shop, which is also a heavily used MST classroom.
Our Idea for after this season is to make mounts on the wall, like shelves almost, platforms being supported by chains and hang each of the robots around the room, however making it easy somehow to bring them down, we don't know how to do the latter yet!
but we have made it clear that NO ONE not even the Advisors are allowed to Dismantle, temporarily dismount, or make any other changes to past year's robot unless it is a sanctioned repair! We need money and showing off the robot has been a very good way of getting it! hehe

I could be mistaken, but one team at the CR (sorry can't remember the number!) had a boombox whose frame looked like it used to be a robot. It was pretty awesome - lexan shell, strobe lights, everything

In the past we've modified last years robot to prototype what we want to do for this year. This year being the exception, our drive train and frame has pretty much stayed the same for the past 3 years, with minor adjustments as needed. It speeds things up alot when you make a systems that you know work and have tested on old bots.

We hang on to and show off last years robot until after nats.
For example, we still have 2001 bot running,(mostly) and will prolly take it apart over the summer.
Small shop. What ya gonna do?
We have various subsystems that worked well laying around the shop.
Correct me if I am wrong Dave, but I think our siccors life from 2001 gave its life to be cast as motor mounts for this year.

Yup. Melted that sucker down. Took about 30 minutes to turn it into four cast motor mounts and a pile of slag. We figured that for at least one year out of two, that aluminum could be a productive contributor to our robot!

We either brutally take it apart and attmept to reuse parts.

Really good ones we keep and practice with (while prototyping).

Harrison has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Our robots have two purposes after they've been used...

1) Sponsors (or potential ones) love seeing a robot driving around the office - they really do...Helps to bring out the cheque books.

2) I need something to keep me busy in my engineering class at school.
