If you go by land size or population, I bet Michigan crushes California in the number of FIRST teams.

If you wanted to think of it that way, the District of Columbia crushes every other state by a whopping margin, because it has 4 teams in a land area of 'tiny.'

Not sure how accurate that information is. Team 891 is no longer registered for the 2005 competition but we are on that list. I wonder if there are any other teams listed there that will not be competing this year. (Or conversely there could be teams that registered late and aren't on the list yet)

But wow!!! Over a thousand teams. That is quite the feat. Congratulations FIRST!

782 is also listed but I have not seen them registered for an event. In their three years they have a regional win, it would be shame if they just faded away.

There are quite a few teams on that list that are no longer registered. I've been keeping my own spreadsheet and by my count there are currently 991 team registered this year (as of 12/16 afternoon). Of those 179 are rookies.

Some interesting stats:

Number of events team are attending
1 event, 604, 60.9%
2 events, 261, 26.3%
3 events, 111, 11.2%
4 events, 14, 1.4%
5 events, 1, 0.1%

Averages:

# of Regionals/Team = 1.300706357
# of Events/team = 1.533804238

Re: How many teams in 2005?

The link was created by going to the teams in a state on FIRST's map and deleting the state and country field. I have a feeling it was generated by teams pre-registering for the competition. When the team either did not register for an event or did not pay fees by Dec. 10, they dropped from the regional listings but not from the "what teams are in this state" listings.

Anne's spread-sheet probably has the right numbers. Unfortunately, a few of these teams are probably not going to make competition and we'll end up between 980 and 990 teams.

This is still an increase; but it goes to show how the extra $1000 in the initial entry fee reduced the rate of growth.

BTW, Kick off is just three weeks away!

Re: How many teams in 2005?

As of today (12/23/04) there are 1021 registered teams! That is absolutely awesome. I love the fact that FIRST has experienced so much international growth this year and I hope that there's plenty more to come in the future.
(Note to any rookie teams out there: If you ever need any help or have any questions, please feel free to contact my team and/or any of the great veteran FIRST teams. We love supporting rookies!)

Re: How many teams in 2005?

As mentioned before, the link posted to list registered teams is not accurate. As per my spreadsheet, there are currently 991 teams registered this year (as of this morning that is).

Re: How many teams in 2005?

Looks like the grand total for this season is 1024 (though some of the rookies and a few veterans have dropped out since being placed on the list).
Good luck in 2005!

Who would have guessed the numbers would reach to 1708 (Mckeesport, PA) this year, eh?
