Looking for a big file on a fast server with good connection

I just got an upgraded internet connection from my ISP. They claim it to be 3Mbps down 300K up. dslreports says it is 2.8Mbps down and 228K up. So, I'm pretty happy (big improvement from 384K down 128K up). Anyway, I've tried downloading some files and I'm liking what I'm seeing but I'm beinglimited by the serving server's upload speed (transfer rate) of like around 330K. So, does anyone know of any large files (40-80 megs maybe) on servers that have a really good conection that I can try downloading. Thanks.

Re: Looking for a big file on a fast server with good connection

Well, the FIRST Frenzy animation at http://robots.nasa.gov/archive/video.htm is coming down at 150k right now for me on cable via WiFi (although I'm about eight feet away, so I don't think there's a significant loss of speed from that). Not a hardcore test of your connection, but it has to start somewhere, right?

It's not going to matter what server you find. ISP's limit the upload speeds so that users dont eat up bandwith uploading monsterous files onto the internet.

Re: Looking for a big file on a fast server with good connection

I also have a 3 megaBIT/s rated download speed. The most I have ever seen coming into my computer (using the DU Meter History page) is about 550 kB/s. This is due to the speed the modem can actually process the data, and the conversion between bits and bytes. (ahh thats how they trick the unsuspecting customer...)

Re: Looking for a big file on a fast server with good connection

550kB/s * 8 = 4.4 mb/s (thats megabits). You were exceeding the rated speed. I have seen this, too, on my 3mb/s connection and I think that cable companies give you a little more speed when few people are using the service. If the spike is only a second or two long, I believe it could be a result of your modem (and possibly router) caching data and releasing it in a large burst that exceeds the maximum speed.

Re: Looking for a big file on a fast server with good connection

Usually microsoft has fast servers. I remeber being on campus and downloading at 2.2mb/s when i downloaded the halo game trial from them.
