Re: Official 2005 Clue Thread

[joke] My friend Nick is going back to his IB school in Hong Kong. You know, I'm so eager to find out about the rules that I'll have him email them to me on the 8th in HK cause it'll be the 7th here! [/joke]

Seriously though, I like the pyramid idea very much after seeing the images Petey posted. If the above post is correct, then perhaps there is a hole or some scoring object in the top? However, if this is to be a solid pyramid, then I dislike the idea because last year's field setup was hard enough to drive around in.

Re: Official 2005 Clue Thread

Since we're in the business of over-analysis, I thought I'd share my immediate thoughts.

The clue kind of reminds me of a clue from a cryptic crossword, wherein oftentimes you have to find hidden meanings through anagrams. (Usually the anagrams are triggered by words such as 'crazy' or 'mixed', but there isn't anything of the sort in this particular clue, which leads me to believe that I'm barking up the wrong tree, but then again who isn't?)

So I've found a few anagrams for the phrase 'pi, you and me', and I've come up with some incredibly useless things, but mildly amusing nonetheless:

Yup, I'm anode
Yea, impound!
You'd pain me
Aim upon dye
Nude myopia

These were some that jumped out at me.

Like I said, in cryptic crosswords, there are usually triggering words, like 'between pi, you and me' could mean that there is a word in order within the letters of those words. (Like the country name 'hungary' in 'don't shun Gary, he just wants to play', which is from a book I had as a younger child).

It's a slightly different way of thinking, which is what first is all about, right? Anyway, I hope kickoff weekend is great for everyone.

I bet they got enough people complaining about last year and about stack attack that they've come up with some way to avoid it.

Although...if you keep on the 3's...we could see 3, 6, and 9 foot pyramids, couldn't we?

I'm still interested in whether or not we'll see baseballs this year. They would be dangerous...but...

One thing we really haven't decided that much is the gameplay. I'm very interested in seeing how this clue fits into the gameplay, not just the physical design of the field.

Re: Official 2005 Clue Thread

to look closely "between" George Burns, John Neun, and Pi Schwert, i looked at their middle names:

George Henry Burns
John Henry Neun
Pi Louis Schwert

did a search for "Henry Louis"
found a Henry Louis Aaron aka Hank Aaron (the baseball player)

Hank Aaron was born February 5th, making his birthstone Amethyst

one of his nicknames was "Hammer" - could the game have somethign to do with hammers or hammering?

Re: Official 2005 Clue Thread

Like most ppl at this point, I haven't read all the posts in this thread. But here's something that I thought of: Last year, a lot of ppl asked to use the CMU Cam on their robots to allow the robot to do image recognition during autonomous (very useful for something like tracking the big yellow balls). It has been mentioned that amythist is used in enhancing optics... leads me to believe the CMU cam will be allowed this year, maybe even part of the kit.

A sidenote: WPI always runs a pre-season warmup in the style of FIRST, and we design the game ourselves. Purely through dumb luck, many of our game design ideas show up in FIRST (great minds...). Something we were toying with was having the scoring zones change colors (i.e. the points in them switch teams) either randomly, timed, or based on the actions of the robots. Their is your purple

Re: Official 2005 Clue Thread

Interesting idea, Ryan. I love that scoring zone change color thing.

I get the feeling that all of the unassisted information leads to a bigger, more in-depth autonomous mode.

What I'm really interested in--and what I'd like to see--is how close all this speculation is going to come to what we actually see. I'd also like to see whoever wrote the quote come forth and see how many of these connections were intended and how many weren't. There is no way that the Hank Aaron thing was intended, but the simple fact that it works out is crazy/scary.

Re: Official 2005 Clue Thread

I just noticed something about the amythyst. In the quote is says, "while wearing Amethyst colored glasses". I think that for propper grammer (correct me if I'm wrong", but for the glasses to be colored Amythyst, it would be "Amethyst-colored". Instead, this looks like these are glasses that are made of Amethyst, but colored in another color. Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but this is interesting if I'm right for once.

Re: Official 2005 Clue Thread

Random additions...

Looking through "colored" glasses is known to distort one's view of things, e.g. looking through rose colored glasses

George Burns sang "Fixing a hole" in Sgt. Pepper video

Looking closely at someone wearing colored glasses, you see a reflection of yourself in the glasses.. and the person wearing them.

Seriously though, I like the pyramid idea very much after seeing the images Petey posted. If the above post is correct, then perhaps there is a hole or some scoring object in the top? However, if this is to be a solid pyramid, then I dislike the idea because last year's field setup was hard enough to drive around in.

Another idea for a solution to the riddle:
Burns played Left Field, Neun played First Base. Think of a baseball diamond with bases numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4 (home). Place Pi at about 3.14 on the diamond. Between Neun, Burns and Pi you will find the pitcher's mound and the position of Short Stop. Perhaps the robot will "pitch" items to create a pyramid at the target "Short Stop". IR or UV sensor (amythyst colored) will sense the items -- "colored glasses."
