Drill Motors Removed? Illegal this year?

I am a first time rule reader this year so please bare with me..

I have seen that FIRST elimated (removed) the drill motors from the kit this year, so if there was a transmission design that used a drill motor, it can not be used this year correct?

quoted from kitofparts.pdf:
"Removed 2 Bosch drill motors & transmissions and replaced them with 2 CIM motors with FIRST transmissions."

It doesn't look like any motors the size of drill motors are included in the kit of parts. (I don't know the names of the motors below and what they look like)

Motor, Globe, w/drive assy
12 Vdc
409A587
2

Motor, CIM
Keyed output shaft
FR801-001
4

Motor, Nippon-Denso, Window , RH
1

Motor, Sliding Door
Taigene
2

Motor, Window, Jideco
RH or LH provided
1

Motor, Fisher-Price, w/21T #7 Gearbox
12 Vdc,, stall torque 532.19 (mNm)
2

I assume that you must only use these motors when you build your robot?

Re: Drill Motors Removed? Illegal this year?

That is correct. You may only use the motors included with the kits. There was an e-mail sent out to all teams earlier this year (you may not have gotten it, as a rookie, but it was posted here on CD) that warned us well ahead of time that the drill motors would not be included and thus be illegal.

Re: Drill Motors Removed? Illegal this year?

Just because the Drill motor was removed doesn't make using a drill motor transmission illegal. The test to determine legal parts is by answering the questions in the decision tree that is in the rules for additiona parts and material.

If a drill motor transmission meets all of the criteria for making it a legal part, then it is a legal part. I believe that the drill transmission is legal, but the drill motor isn't.

You can buy more CIM's as spares, but you can't use more than the four they provided in the KOP

That's correct. As I recall, your team used a lot more than two drill transmissions last year. An impressive machine, BTW.

Re: Drill Motors Removed? Illegal this year?

It should also be noted that there is only 1 globe motor and 1 Taigene Sliding Door Motor.

From "FRC Public Announcements"

Taigene Sliding Door Motor
The "Gray Container Item 5 Loose" should have contained 1 motor, not 2. The Kit of Parts list incorrectly specified a quantity of 2.

Globe Motor
The "Gray Container Item 5 Loose" should have contained 1 motor, not 2. The Kit of Parts list incorrectly specified a quantity of 2.

Re: Drill Motors Removed? Illegal this year?

You are only allowed to use the motors in the kit, no substitutions. You can only substitute exact model motors for ones that break.

Yes, you can power any transmission that is safely in the rules with only motors that are provided for you.

Please read Team update #1 posted yesterday for more info on motors. The numbers were incorrect on your inventory lists. Those motors listed are the only motors that can be used. Please also see the dialog between Dr. Joe and Paul Copioli on the mabuchi motor specs, in the motor forum (or search).
