2 drive motors VS 4 drive motors

well with the addition of 4 cim motors in the kit this year my team got caught up in a debate. 2 drive motors or 4 drive motors. I was wondering what everyone else decided to do. And i was also looking for the pros and cons of the different setups. From what i've done with my own calculations, and i was wondering if someone could verify that having 4 cim motors with the kit transmission how much more torque and/or speed can you achieve.

Re: 2 drive motors VS 4 drive motors

I am at school right now, I will do the calculation when I get home.

2 chips on the transmission... Stalling at 2.22 N*m.

Reduction - 14:50, 14:50

and then another reduction 21:38

Grab John V. Neun's calculation spreadsheet which can be found in the whitepaper section...

do the calculation.

Re: 2 drive motors VS 4 drive motors

Right now, 1293's got all four CIMs bolted up to the stock tranny.

And we're changing those wheels, just for some extra grip and all that.

Re: 2 drive motors VS 4 drive motors

My team, 399, is looking at the four CIM motors with the supplied tranny to drive our robot. We are though changing the wheels so we can get more traction.

my team decided to use two motors for a two speed drive train and are going to replace the wheels, and possibly go with treads.

Re: 2 drive motors VS 4 drive motors

We are using two motors for weight, and using 6" wheels to slow. Out of the box the robots run at about 11 ft per sec (ish), and switching to 6" wheels brings it down around 7. Still a bit fast in my opinion, but I'm too lazy to switch sprockets.

Re: 2 drive motors VS 4 drive motors

We are using both transmissions with dual motors. We are also doing a 6 wheel design. We are also planning on using 8 inch wheels.

Re: 2 drive motors VS 4 drive motors

Our team is using 2 motors on each side so a total of 4, we are using the kit gear boxes, they seem to be very good and reliable.

Re: 2 drive motors VS 4 drive motors

Plan is stock drive train, 4 motors and double the wheels in the back, custom sprocket in the center (.25 flange on both sides) of the 8" wheels, may get rubber reshaped, and or, glue on better traction material. More time is going into the transmissions for the arm. Hope this all is not too large a project for our third year.
