Thumbs down measurement problems?

In the future could we have someone who's familiar with the building construction industry to lay out the list of materials required for building the goals...everyone knows that a 2 x 4 is an inch and a half by three and a half...where did inch and a quarter come from?

Re: measurement problems?

In the past wood was cut with a band saw to the exact dimensions and sold as is. This is call rough saw-en lumber. It was found that wood could be planned smooth up to a 1/2 in smaller and not loose strength. So now lumber is sold a 1/2 inch undersized in all dimensions and planned smooth.

well Actually a 2x4 can vary anywhere between 1 3/8 x 3 3/8 to 1 3/4 x 3 3/4

but is usually is 1.5x 3.5,

and i didn't know that until i started working in lumber at home depot

and everyone knows that Firsts BOM and Field designs are +/- a 1/4 in
