Re: rookie teams for alliance partner

My own little personal anecdote - last year in Sacramento our pit was next to that of a (rookie, I think?) team called the Bad News Bears (don't remember the number)
They had not known that there was a shipping deadline and had literally nothing but a bunch of parts and some plywood the first day.
~scroll forward a day~
After losing our last two matches of the day (or something like that) and dropping out of our coveted top 8 position, we ended up being picked by none other than the 3rd place Bad News Bears...

Never underestimate any team, not even the rookies

Re: rookie teams for alliance partner

I don't want to seem like a pessimist, but make sure you get your name out there!

Last year, our team came in 23 at Regionals, and about 16 at our section in Nat's and we didn't get picked for final alliances... we played pretty well & very consistent, but we had a small team, and no one quite knew who we were.

This year I hope we have some information to give other teams!

Re: rookie teams for alliance partner

Last year at the West Michigan Regional when it came to the finals we paired with a rookie team and ended up winning the whole thing. We liked the way on how they were comfortable with how they had their robot built and how they had managed to make such and efficient design. (Vaughn told me all this, they kicked me out of the pits last year because they thought I would accidentally break the robot while fixing it... I sense a great sense of trust there... well this year they are letting me work in the pits...)

Re: rookie teams for alliance partner

We (Team 535) were rookie in 2001. Our first regional was Grand Rapids. At the end of the qualification matches we ended up 42nd out of 50 teams. We weren't bad but we were consistent. Team 111 (Wild Stangs) picked us as there alliance partner. Our alliance posted the second highest score of all the regionals to date. The alliance of Team 71 (Beatty) had to beat us with a higher score. We finished second in the finals. It came down to the final match.
I have never forgotten Wild Stangs.
We got two Rookie All-Star awards.
Don't under estimate the rookies.

I'm proud to say that as a member of Big Red Robotics (19) our team roster proudly boasts a total of 8 people, in a school of 2800. Change of the dice, eh?

Re: rookie teams for alliance partner

I don't think teams care about rookie status. We were a rookie team last year and ended up with the 4th seed at the Midwest Regional. There were plenty of veteran teams begging us to pick them, they didn't care we were a rookie. I think some of the confusion comes from the fact that teams pick teams that are good at many elements of the game. Many times, including our team last year, rookie teams decide not to do everything (we just didn't hang last year) so as to not give themselves too much work. Because of this, rookie teams don't always do everything so other teams don't pick them. There are also many veteran teams that didn't do everything and I know last year we didn't care that they were veterans, we didn't pick them because they didn't do everything (not to say our picks were good, because they weren't, we were just to carried away with being 4th to pay close enough attention to scouting other teams very well)

Re: rookie teams for alliance partner

i love picking rookies.....normally many ppl pass over them cause they are not as experienced, but it is much more fun to pick someone that people don't know....

2001 i picked 538 (rookie at the time) as the third selection overall and i got earful from my teammates for not picking team X, but as it turns out we then went on to win KSC in 2001 very handily.....good times....i think the final score in the finals was 490-168

so in short i love to pick rookies....they make great partners

Re: rookie teams for alliance partner

I'd play with a rookie any day. The success of rookies in 2004 will carry on to this year as well. Afterall, they think of the things that veterans could never expect.

Rookies are awesome!
Everybody loves rookies, they bring new life to FIRST.
Veterans are always excited to see what new teams bring to the local competition. Or at least I am. =P

Re: rookie teams for alliance partner

Last year in portland we were a rookie team, and we were set up right next to the Issaquah Robotics Society (Dont mess with the IRS I think was their little slogan thing) which was another rookie team I am pretty sure. In any case we had a few disasters along the way, but we were pretty good at capping goals, but even so we were totally shocked when they picked us as aliance partners along with another team that was all wearing green (I got their number upstairs but Im lazy). Then both of their robots had electrical problems, and we had to pretty much singlehandedly take on other aliances. That wasnt fun because it meant we got to double empty goals, but the point is that all you have to do is have a few desireable qualities that fit with another teams strategy, then they dont care if your team didnt exist until last week, they will still pick you.

Re: rookie teams for alliance partner

There is another option. You can seed, pick your alliance, and win the regional. That's what the rookie team I mentored (1405) did last year.

Re: rookie teams for alliance partner

Who said that the rookies aren't going to be the ones picking? Last year we were the ones picking at the NJ regional. We were in the top 8 at the Chesapeke Regional but we were picked by 25 (Raider Robotics) and at nationals we ended up being picked by 281. Nobody cares if you are a rookie team because picks are done by who performs the best and not by who has the lower number!

GO 1403!!!
