118's Championship Stories

Team 118's students leave for Florida tomorrow afternoon, but there are a few students, engineers, parents, alumni, and interested third parties that are going to be left behind in Houston when that bus pulls away into its 24 hour odyssey to Orlando.

So my idea is to post a little summary here of what goes on during each match. I'm not sure if I'll be able to fight my way to a computer after every match, but I'll try to do it at least a few times a day. Feel free to post questions about how we're doing and what we're up to.

Brandon: If this is an inappropriate use for your site, please let me know now, and I'll set up something on blogspot or yahoo, but one of the goals of this little experiment is to get more of our team members to use this great resource you guys provide.

Hey Kris I may be able to help you. As of now there is a 50/50 percent chance that im going to Florida. I found some discounted "last minuite vacations" on expedia.com and cheaptickets.com. If I do go I will try to help you put some posts up about how we did. If I dont go i will watch the webcasts of our matches and post a something from Texas Tech. If I do go I will be arriving thursday night and leaving early monday morning. If i dont go then good luck and...

Excellent....
If you can't find a room to crash in, I think that mine might only have me and one other person.

Sorry to be the one to have to break this to you, but I think that this cheer has been quashed, because no one could make any sense out of it. But you can try to revive it.

Also, please forward this link to anyone you can think of that might be interested. (Other alums, etc.)

Well I kinda knew that the old cheer was dead. Just had to put it in there to help remember the 2001 season.

I probably wont need the room. The package deal i am getting from either cheaptickets.com or expedia.com come with a hotel room. It is acually cheaper to buy these "last minutie vacation" deals with airfare and room than to buy airfare alone from these same sites. It really doenst make sense but it gets me to Nationals so im not complaining.

Ill try to send this link to as many people as possible but right now i have an EE final to worry about. 9:30AM is quicly approaching. Once im done with that i got to worry about booking the trip and packing. Probably the easist way to send it to Alumni is to click on the email all students on the previous years webpages.

What im trying to figure out is how to get my Leatherman throught security. Im going to have to end up sticking this little thing in a small box and checking it. I cant imagine a FIRST event without it. I even had it with me at Kickoff and LSR this year. Nathan acually used it alittle at LSR.

Anyways Back to digital circuits, ram chips, sequential circuits, and boolean algebra A.K.A The Wonderful World of EE.

Practice Rounds

Good morning, FIRST fans!

We've arrived here in Florida, and we've unpacked. Rob, Nathan, and the rest of the base pit crew are busy putting together the modified gear boxes and getting ready for our practice rounds.

For those watching at home, we have three practice rounds today:

10:51 on Archimedes
1:24 on Curie
3:48 on Einstein

Post here if you have any questions about what we're doing, and wish us luck!

Thumbs up Valkyrie's cobwebs

118's first practice round today was a qualified success. Rob and Nathan had the new drive train up and running by match time, and it performed well for the first few minutes. Valkyrie was quick off the line, grabbed two goals, and nudged them into scoring position.

Then, while the field was being reset for another run at the goals, our stage team noticed that the high speed chain had broken, due to a weak or poorly connected link. Jestin cleared the broken chain, and decided to continue using low speed, which was still working great.

While continuing practice in low speed mode, Jestin and Bob both got a chance to show off their moves. Jestin was in a pushing match with our opponents (I don't remember the number, sorry) and literally drove circles around them. Bob also had the chance to drive a few circles of his own. After deploying mini-me with one minute left in practice, the two robot, two goal continent started rotating the opposite direction that Bob was driving the mini-me. He turned around, and drove it in a perfect circle, keeping the tether clear of all goals and robots until he had a straight shot to the endzone. A beautiful move.

Unfortunately, the low speed chain also jumped late in the match, and bent the new axle. This caused us to miss our next practice round, but the good news is that we think we finally have the problem under control, and we shouldn't have any more drive train trouble.

I'll post another update after our next practice, on Einstein at 3:48.

Kris

Thumbs up 118's Cinderella Story

Well, I didn't post as much as advertised, but it seems like you all know what went on!

We qualified in the high 50's with an average QP of below 45. We won all of our matches except for the first two on Friday. Our first match on Friday, we were defeated by team 233, a pink ball bot, owned by a team with a lot of team spirit. The game was very close, but 233 made it in to score a lot of balls despite the best efforts of our alliance partner.

That was ok, though, since 233 ended up picking us to participate with them and team 25 in the 3rd seed Archimedes alliance. This was a fantastic alliance! We might not have had the strongest pushers or best ball dumpers, but we had what had to be the three smartest drive teams here.

They're kicking us outof the internet tent, now, so I'll post more later. Take care.

Kris

Lucian's haircut

Lucian got a mohawk.

I saw it with my own eyes.

Let's start back a little further for those who don't know the whole story.

It goes like this:

Lucian issued a challenge to the team to win the Sportsmanship award for the championship event. The students decided that, if they won, it would be cool to be able to give Lucian a mohawk, and so they got him to sign this on March 26: Haircut page

So the students and teachers (and some parents and engineers) spent hour upon hour preparing for the event. They made flags, hats, letters, signs, you name it. And they won a well-deserved sportsmanship award. Lucian, true to his word, got a mohawk Saturday night. Spiked and colored white and everything. Everyone who wanted got a chance to take some of his hair off, but Judy and Rachel did the most work, and Lucian ended up with a haircut that will last him a long time. And by a long time, I mean until Wednesday when he shaves it off.
