Fix-it window and dashboard code changes

Does the "fix-it window" rule apply to software used on a dashboard PC connected to the OI?

If so, can software for displaying OI data be made outside of the "fix-it" window if the changes are re-created (source code changes re-typed and recompiled) at the competition site?

I had the same question, and my conclusion was that you could technically get away with it, but it probably is not in the spirit of the rules. Then again using the same logic a practice bot isnt in the spirit of the rules, and they say you can build one of those. Anyone want to make the argument that dashboard development after fix it is over is ok? Please?

I would say that a dashboard is legal. The fix-it window applies to code developed for the robot. While the dashboard does interpret signals from the robot, it does not run or operate the robot. I see it as more of a control device... which controls nothing... so it's not a control device.... (Here's to disproving myself) Anyways, if you're just making it more readable or understandable, I don't see any problem in that. It will not directly change the performance of the robot. I say go for it.

Thats a good point. If writing dashboard software wasnt allowed, then any other upgrades to your computer that could possibly affect your software in competition would be allowed.
