Who was the first to realize that you could painlessly pierce the ears (i mean, did people just randomly stick sharp objects through their body and see how much it hurt?)

I actually have a funny story about this .. I was at camp and we were playing "the salt game" where you pass the salt shaker across the table and first person to get it to land half on the table half off the edge wins ... so we were playing and I knocked it over and my counsellor told me to throw salt over my left shoulder into the face of the devil .. so i poured some salt into my hand and threw it over my left shoulder. Into the face of a 6 year old.
