Inventor Help
Hey,
I'm trying to learn how to use Inventor, I did most of the tutorials, but I can't figure out how to cut the rail for the robot that i found on the Internet, can anyone help me? I don't know it I'm using the wrong file or just don't know what tool to use. Peter |

Re: Inventor Help
If the rail is an feature that is extruded along its length, you can right click that extruded feature in the browser bar and select "edit feature" to change the length. Or. You can make a new sketch on one end of this rail, and then "extrude cut" back however far you want. Or you could sketch on the side of it however much you want to take out, and "extrude cut" that away.

Re: Inventor Help
Or, if you are trying to cut on an angle, make a work plane (defined by three points usually) that is at the right angle and use 'Split'. Select the work plane and then select that you want to remove a side. Select all of the many faces that are involved and click OK. If the wrong side is removed, edit the feature and click the button that has 2 arrows going in opposite directions (this icon reverses the direction of a selection in almost anything).

I haven't been ably to try it yet, but it seems to make sense. Thanks, Peter |

Re: Inventor Help
Hey,
I tried to use the extrude tool, but is there was an error message that said, "No Unconsumed Visible Sketches." What can i do to extrude, or was the not what u were talking about. Also when i try to make a work axis, it puts up a message that says, "Work Plane3: Could not build this Plane by three points." Maybe the problem is that I'm not using the right kind of file, or I'm completely confused. Any help you can give would be appreciated. Thanks, Peter |

Re: Inventor Help
Either make a new sketch of the area you want to "cut away" or you can (in the browser bar) right click on a particular sketch and chose "share sketch" Then you should not get the no unconsumed sketches error.
But even before all that, is the current part an extruded feature? If so, have you tried just editing the length of that extrusion? |

Re: Inventor Help
Hey,
I finally figured out what you were trying to say, but when i try to use the general dimension tool, it says, "Cannot constrain or dimension reference or fixed geometry" what am i doing wrong? Thanks, Peter |

Re: Inventor Help
I'm assuming you put a new sketch on a face. If you did it on the end, celebrate, because all you have to do is go to part features, click on extrude, click on the picture that indicates cutting away (it's the middle one), enter the distance you want to extrude, and you're done.
If you are doing it from the side, it's a little more complex but it isn't all that bad. On your new sketch, make a line that is coincident (touches) the top and bottom of what you want to extrude. Make sure the line is paralell to the end of the piece (or perpendicular to the lines it touches, it's the same thing). Then click on general dimension, and click on your new line (the green one) and the end of the piece that you want to extrude. On the dimension, enter the distance that you want to cut the piece back, and go to extrude. It will ask you to click a profile, so click what you want to extrude away. Click on the thing to extrude the piece away, and where the thing that says distance is, click on the arrow to the right of it and change it to all. Good luck and HTH, Daniel |

Re: Inventor Help
Inventor is saying that you can't dimention some part that is already made. You are probably making a sketch on a face of an already extruded part. That face's geometry is now part of the sketch, but you can't change the dimentions of it in you current sketch. If the part is the wrong size, you need to go to it's sketch that you made it from to change it.
One thing you have to remember is that Inventor is what they call Parametric Modeling. This is a fancy term to say that every dimention is related to the others. If you make an extrution and then make another extrution the same shape as the first, then edit the first one, the second one will change. That isn't the only example, but is easy to understand. Also, if you want an object to be always square, no mater what size, you can tell one dimention on a rectangle to be whatever the other one is. When you dimention something in a sketch, you are really telling it the size it needs to be. AutoCAD tells you how long something is. Inventor tells you how long something is and wants you to change it. To do the same thing in AutoCAD, you have to remake a part. The power come from, aparently, a huge database of dimentions and other things you have made. Our chassis model is in an assembly and has about 600 dimentions, including constraints, which are dimentions of a different type. |

Re: Inventor Help
Hey,
Does anyone know where i can get 35 gear chain for Inventor, or are we not expected to use chain? If we are expected to use how would we go about using the placing the chain on the gears. Also does anyone know where i can get all of the components for the 2005 first 8 inch wheel? Thanks, Peter |

Re: Inventor Help
If you know all of the angles involved and the lengths of the sides, you can do it. Make a sketch of a triangle (I'm assuming that you mean the Tetras). Make sure the angles and lengths are right using constraints. Finish the sketch and extrude to a good heigth. then use taper to narrow it down. Enter the angle and you should be good to go. This is, howerever, a long path and there might be a better one.
