Post Making your website avaliable to all

There's no longer one type of browser, on one operating system. Your website may look perfect in Windows Explorer, but a mess in Firefox, and unaccessable in Opera, thus I encourage you to down load the major browsers and view your site with them. You may also want to test your site out on different systems (i recommend you check it in WIN 98 because it is still widely used) If you want everyone to be able to access your site, it should only require an HTML compatible browser to view, and not dependant on cookies or javascript. This does not mean that you should neglect new technology, use it, but give an option for those who do not have it. Also validation is important for cross-platform compliance, and good structure. Here are some links that may help...

Re: Making your website avaliable to all

Windows 98 and XP should parse HTML exactly the same - if both are running IE6.0, although XP doesn't come with Java preinstalled, but that's really the only difference, no?

What about viewing it on a Mac? Or do we not like them?

Re: Making your website avaliable to all

it should if they both have the exact same version of IE, however, windows updates like service pack 2 has made the XP version extremely paranoid. The main lesson of the whole subject is, just because it looks good on your computer, doesn't mean it looks the same in every computer (a lot of designers forget that)

Don't forget our handheld friends. Ideally, your page will look at least decent on a screen with no more than 320 pixels of horizontal resolution. This can be accomplished by using the "handheld" css type to have another stylesheet for small screen devices.

Re: Making your website avaliable to all

You don't have to make websites compatable with Avant Browser, last I recalled. Avant, just like Maxathon and many others, use the IE rendering engine. So, if it looks fine in IE, it should look the same in Avant and all browsers that use the IE rendering engine.

And you don't have to really do compatability for Netscape, either. They use the Mozilla/Geko engine.

For the Warlocks, I, at the very least, make sure it works in IE and Firefox for Windows. The only known problem I have found is with Internet Explorer:mac, which just completely renders it wrong. Although, I think, why use IE:mac? There's Safari right pre-installed on Macs.

OS 9 macs dont... There are some still at my school. I make sure my sites display correctly in Firefox and IE. They happen to work in IE:Mac (the worst browser ever made?).

Greg -- thanks for the handheld tip. I'm too poor to have such a device, so I kinda forgot about that... :-D

My biggest gripe with website _un_availiability is: flash. 'nuff said.

Re: Making your website avaliable to all

IE5 Mac is pretty bad, but IE Windows is even worst.

Compare how http://theforceteam.com/new looks in IE Windows, as compared to any other browser. It's fine in everything else. It validates fine. IE just doesn't like it.

I read in Macworld a CSS hack to get around these problems, though. I lent it to our main webmaster--when I get it back, I'll post it.

Just because the CSS code is correct, it doesn't mean that it is how you want it to look: this is because you may have left portions of code out that determine where things are and how big they are, and stuff like that, that you may think is implied, but the browser does not have to assume anything, you have to assume that it doesn't do the default as you would like it to be.... setting all the attributes is one of the best ways out of this.

Re: Making your website avaliable to all

www.gleberobotics.com

it displays fine in IE, but when you go to firefox, it seems to mess up on pages with pictures. but if you refresh the page, it works fine

I have no idea how to fix this.

For an example, check out this page in IE and firefox
