Scouting via Handhelds

Hey everyone, it's that time of the year again. I've been searching through threads and team websites and have yet to find what I am looking for. Has anyone seen or created a scouting program for palm pilots. Usually WASH does but i think that fell through last year. I'm trying to get a feel for what other teams think are important and then I want to make my own. All help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot and good luck!

Also, use this thread to discuss making scouting programs. I think this would really help everyone out.

Re: Scouting via Handhelds

That would be sweet. I've never written anything for a palm before. I'm sure someone has though. Perhaps somebody will step forward and show us what they've got.

I think there was also an earlier discussion where people could use their i-pods for the same purpose.

Well, that's actually what i was trying to do. I know that last year there was a program WASH put out but i haven't' been able to get in contact with anyone. If there is anyone from WASH or Soap that can get there hands on this please post or e-mail me. I'm sure there would be a lot of teams that would use it.

We're hopefully using WASH again this year, but I'm not sure if we're sharing the scouting load with other teams as we did in the past, or if we're making the programs available for other teams to use. It all depends on how quickly we can get the new software developed. PM me with your email address and I'll pass it on to the scouting team leader.

Well last year we made the program with i think access, so the program was universal. It worked for palm and a windows app.

Re: Scouting via Handhelds

Be careful and read the competition rules BEFORE using handhelds at a competition for scouting. You could probably do it as long as you don't try to send anything between the stands and the pits by airwaves. However, cell phone use-and most likely handheld use- is usually frowned upon at the events. And walkie talkies--don't try it.
My point is that you need to be careful when using these devices.

Re: Scouting via Handhelds

I wouldn't think of it with all FIRST'S restrictions. The best way to do it is to sync the handhelds with a computer. At least that's what we've always done.

I hear that someone might be up to some handheld work for competition. I'd bring mine just in case if you want to be able to use the resource.

Come on Silence you're killing me! I knew that someone from 108 would know. Is it possible to get this before the first set of regionals? Thanks.

Well... define the F.I.R.S.T. set of regionals. UCF?

Ill cut to the chase... yes, S.O.A.P. is working hard towards making Wireless Access to the S.O.A.P. database. However it's not up and running as of yet, and I cannot promise that it will be up by UCF. I don't remember if UCF is the first regional to take place, however I promise to have an update about two weeks before it.

EDIT: While looking at your name I realize that you wont be at any of the regionals that S.O.A.P. 108 normally attends. I haven't decided on how we're going to cover those regionals yet, but as I said, two weeks before Orlando I will give an update.

Re: Scouting via Handhelds

Hey guys, this is the CA leader for the Chiefs:

I was just wondering if anyone can or has come up with something in Visual Studio. I came up with a Excel sheet that dose calculations of averages on different aspects of the game on each team, but I am really trying to come up with something in Visual Studio (just i have never programed before). Something kind of like the program that someone from team 188 came up with for last years game. I will post what I have come up with in the white papers when I get a chance (hopefully by ship date) so if you guys want to use it you can. It is something that I know works on like a Dell handheld.

Everyone have a great season.
