I had a similar experience.

I had 4 invites for awhile and I finally gave one away 2 weeks ago which brought me down to 3. The 3 only lasted until the next day and I was back up to 4. Then sometime in the middle of last week I went up to 50!

Google is wanting everyone to do their work of finding people for GMail.
this will be mean, but if you don't want to wait for invites go to www.spymac.com . You get a blog, photogallery, an 1gig of email storage.
I myself do use GMail and spymac.
I still need to get rid of My 50 invites too.
