Problem w/Mesh

We have problems with some objects that were created in 3ds max 6. When we group them the group cannot move, rotate or scale. When we try to link them the parent can be moved, but the children don't follow.

We were hoping bringing the file into max 7 would solve the problem, but the strange behaviour is still there.

This is not a problem on new stuff created in max 7; just the stuff started in 6. Most of the objects would be simple to recreate, but one mesh would take a long time duplicate.

We sorta solved the problem by exporting, then importing a 3DS file, but we loose the modifier stack.

Any other suggestions?

Re: Problem w/Mesh

Have you tried importing the objects into max7 and then re-saving the file?

The only reason I can think of that would not make the group move is the Position controller deleted or you accidentally pressed the spacebar, which locks the objects and prevents you from moving the objects.

If you could post the file, I could try and figure it out.

Re: Problem w/Mesh

Yes - I tried to resave in max 7 but the locked groups persist. However anything created new in 7 works fine.

I've attached an example max file. It has a simple group that wont move, rotate or scale.

Re: Problem w/Mesh

Fixed

Ok, here's what you need to do.
1) You can either UNGROUP the objects or OPEN the group
2) select one of the objects
3) In the COMMAND PANEL, click on the MOTION TAB.
4) Select TRANSFORM: Link Constraint... and click on the box just above the window.
5) In the dialogue that pops up, select Position/Rotation/Scale
6) click OK and repeat steps 2-5.

The problem was that you had the wrong Transform controller.
here are some screenshots to help you:
one, two,
three

and here's the fixed MAX file: frozen_group

it should work. if there's any further clarifications that need to be addressed or you're not sure of something, please let me know. I hope i've helped...
Good Luck

Re: Problem w/Mesh

Thank you very much KCY! That fixed the problem.

I guess I must have accidentially set the default from position/rotation/scale to link constraint. This locked up all new groups.

Man - there are a thousand hidden settings in this program!
