It's Back! 4-Speed Shift-On-The-Fly Tranny. New and Improved!

Here it is! 4 speed shifting tranny using the tested and proven technokat method shifting on the fly with dogs. This years was inspired even further by the 254/60 six wheel drive setup used last year which mounts directly to the chassis rails and powers the center wheels with no chain reduction. Speeds are 4, 8, 12, and 16 fps. Currently installed with one CIM on each side, but will have one CIM and one FP w/ AM planetary for competition.

Feel free to ask any questions about the setup.

Re: It's Back! 4-Speed Shift-On-The-Fly Tranny. New and Improved!

Mad props to Travis, Kirk, and the other leaders of RAWC. I'm really glad to see it's up and running again. Of course the colors couldn't be more spot on. It brings a tear of joy to my eyes to see another low funded team (like my old 258) making beautiful and complex components / mechanisms with such little cash and such little resources. I'm very happy for you guys that you didn't have to resort to kit-botting it with the incredible design talent your team wields. Congrats again on another great robot, 968!

Re: It's Back! 4-Speed Shift-On-The-Fly Tranny. New and Improved!

Travis,

I can't wait to see it in person.

I have a couple questions. Are there only two bearings on the output shaft/center wheel axle? One in the "inner" gearbox plate and one on the "outside" of the frame? This is the way I envision it would be done, but if there are more than two bearings, I sure would like to know how you avoid binding.

Also, with the last shaft in the gearbox essentially being a wheel axle, how does that affect gear mesh if the wheel takes a hit or something, especially with an exposed wheel. Or does everything fit so precisely that nothing can move even if hit?

Last, I can't wait to see/hear more on that wheel.

Travis and the rest of Team 968,

That is an absolutely gorgeous transmission. I commend you for taking transmission design in FIRST to the next level. I can't wait to see it run.

Yes, we hope. I believe this is the way 254/60 did it last year (I think 22 did it too). The difference is that we have a hole in that shaft for the dog shifting shaft, which weakens it quite a bit. We did the math and it seems like it should be fine. We did some other things differently as to maximize the strength of that shaft with the hopes that an impact will not affect anything. Only time will tell.

Wow... the Robotics Alliance of West Covina has done it again, and this time it looks great.

The three-sided, star shaped cylinder plate is simply beautiful. I cannot wait to see this up close. Travis and all, great job.

Very, very nice. Will you shift in manually or automatically, or both?

Re: It's Back! 4-Speed Shift-On-The-Fly Tranny. New and Improved!

That is very sweet!

How are you going to shift both manually and automatically? Will you have a switch to change between manual and automatic? Or will you have an override that allows it to be automatic until you shift manually?
