Re: which program do you download your files with?

I hate to be the voice of reason, but.. file sharing is not always illegal.

I distinctly remember that this year permission was given to share the kickoff video. (Bit-Torrent I believe it was?)

Yes, stealing.. (if you choose to believe that the act of downloading music and movies is truely stealing) is wrong, but don't be to judgemental on this person. The question was what program do you use to download stuff.
Not, what program do you use to steal music, movies, and other things from the internet with to make the RIAA and MPAA all cranky cause they only are making a billion dollars this quarter in earnings as opposed to 1.5 billion..

(I wish I had that kind of income..)

I very much like to be the voice of reason and I have to agree with Elgin. These programs have plenty of legal uses. I frequently download stuff legally with them. Personally, I use shareaza (www.shareaza.com) most of the time. It accesses 3 networks (bittorrent, gnutella, gnutella 2, and edonkey) and keep stream files from all simulatneously.

Re: which program do you download your files with?

I would ask that it be clarified precisely what you are asking these programs to be used for. If it is shareware, please simply state it and it'll be the end of that. While I agree there are legal files, I rarely see a thread posted in that context.

If I need to download a file, for example a document that I upload from the lab to read over again at home, or something that my lab people upload, it is generally uploaded onto a website server and I'm given a URL to use to access it.

Bittorrent is convenient for many files that are in fact quite legal, i.e., large applications that may be simply less expensive to load over that sort of system. However, even for legal files, Kazaa and others are tricky programs to consider because from what I can say, most of the file audience to that program is quite illegal.

Just my $.02
