You have a very small wheelbase... what prompted this decision. (What do you know that we don't )

Someone on the team work with planes?
We owe it all to a guy named Jerry Smyth. He's a former navy aviator. Back in the 60's he developed and built a plane called Sidewinder. Over a hundred have been built and flown. The bot is done in the same fashion as airplanes. It's called Monocoque. It uses the principle of bending metal to increase strength. The whole arm and bot are put together with nothing but pop rivets. The two uprights supporting the arm are very strong. We dare anyone to bend them.
The arm is EXTREMELY strong. It weighs 23 pounds. The pneumatic cylinder has the capability to lift 150 pounds. We will have a 11' reach. Notice also where the pivot point is.

The robot is 27x37 inches and will be 60" tall. It has only two drive wheels and four ball casters in the corners. We can turn on a dime and give 9 cents change

See you all at the Boilermaker regional.

Re: pic: !501 Robot

How does your robot not tip wiith such a long arm and small base? Is your chassis very heavy or do you heavy some kind of nifty counterweight?

Re: pic: !501 Robot

We have not tried to extend the arm in the down position. We don't want to either. Our strategy is to pick up the vision tetra and than configure the arm in the up position. After that we have no need to lower the arm unless we are trying to pick up another tetra off the floor. At the human load position the arm will be up and retracted.
If you notice where the pivot point is and that we have the van door motor driving it. We should have a built in counterweight.

Thanks to all for the complements.

Re: pic: !501 Robot

Yeaterday after we got the front bulkhead fastened down, we put the arm on and did some more testing. With the arm down and fully extended it would hold a standard tetra without tipping. But I wouldn't want to drive it around that way. With the arm up and fully extended up the staircase, the robot was very stable holding a vision tetra.

The whole arm only weights 23lbs and a lot of that weight is in the back. The base is the max legal dimensions (with a little wiggle room), altough it may not look like it in the picture. With the monocoque construction, we should be underweight for once. This would allow us to either put counter weight on the arm or more weight in the back of the base to make it even ore stable.
