The little Mabuchi motor, Who's using it?
The thread title says it all. When I saw this little guy in the kit, I was really curious as to what sort of uses teams would find for it. According to the spec sheets it's only 9.4W, so there's not all that much pep to it. But, I never cease to be amazed at the creative engineering employed by some teams.
So here's your opportunity to show off your creativity. Don't be shy, let us know how you've used the Mabuchi. Last edited by Karthik : 28-02-2005 at 05:32. |

Actually, I think its holding down a large stack of papers in our back room. Doesn't really do a good job at that even.

Give me the Mabuchi motor if you didn't use it. I will make a small robot and race your's!!! ... Well I believe that there are a lot of things that can be done with the Mabuchi motor. Just because the motor is small and weaker than the ones supplied in the kit of parts, doesn't mean that it's bad or doesn't work well... wait till you get to the competitions, you will be amazed by what teams have come up with. ... Thanks Karthik for bringing up this topic, I was wondering about the same thing. |

Our team is not using the Mabuchi motor (as of yet anyways...). However, there could be valid applications for the Mabuchi motors - for tasks that demand little power, such as releasing latching devices. It could be used in a similar manner as a servo might. I bet there are teams who have come up with some interesting uses for the Mabuchi, and I too am curious to hear about them. |

Re: The little Mabuchi motor, Who's using it?
I was gonna start a new topic for this, but since this is here, I guess I'll just resurrect this one. Did ANYONE use it this year? I haven't seen it used, but then again, I wasn't looking very closely.

Re: The little Mabuchi motor, Who's using it?
I walked the pits of SVR and LA and did not see a single Mabuchi motor. Teams, if you have used this motor, PLEASE let us know about it.

Re: The little Mabuchi motor, Who's using it?
We used it this year to extend our arm (through a couple of chain & sprocket reductions). Stop by Pit 34 to see a Mabuchi in action

I just don't see how this motor could be strong enough for such a task. I'll defnetly stop by your pit, it sounds awsome. Dave |

Re: The little Mabuchi motor, Who's using it?
yeah me and the other advisors when upon opening the kit found the little mabuchi and sort of were dumbstuck as we wondered if FIRST had gone crazy sending us this little motor. We then continued on making fun of the motor and made up plans to make a robot drivetrain with only mabuchi motors which included very crude drawings that were thrown away quickly. I think ours is on a chain as a piece of bling. It is a cute little motor. weak but cute.

I think it's actually a usefull motor if you design a little gear reduction around it. We drive a lead screw with the Mabuchi to extend the length of our arm (even when loaded with a tetra). ![]() Last edited by Ed Sparks : 16-04-2005 at 22:31. |

Re: The little Mabuchi motor, Who's using it?
i was going to borrow it to drive my 1.5v micro-electric sae car. lol that thing would have been so fast. but alas even as small and light weight as it is it is still to big and too heavy for that little car.

I don't like to revive an old thread, but I'm still curious. Did ANYBODY else use the Mabuchi motor?

Re: The little Mabuchi motor, Who's using it?
I've started a design for the Mabuchi motor to be used in a gyro using the Coriolis force. After I've proven the design I'll post it.
