I use one laptop with a full screen Real Media player and a TV out. That connects to the camcorder's input (I use a Sony TRV750). The camcorder then goes IEEE 1394 (Firewire) to a second machine that runs the capture software. Record clips as necessary and then combine them all and render when the dust settles (or your drives fill up). Today's Q01-Q50 took 28Gbyte before editing.

There are freeware programs that will record video streams. It seems a little bit easier than a two-laptop one-digital-camcorder setup.
