One interesting "walker" showed one of the differences between virtual and actual evolution. It was merely a very large stick that just fell over itself a few times. The computer program recognized this as a successful walker because of its average speed and it survived the evolution process.
Heheh.... While we are on the topic of artificial evolution there is an article in a recent Discover Magazine about a program called Avida. It is probably the closest thing that anyone could get to actual evolution. Even the creator himself was amazed at what the program created. Of course now we will probably have to content with evolving viruses.
