Question Poll-Play Animations While Refs are Scoring?

Should we play Teams Animations on the big screen while the Referees are figuring out the scores after a match?

Ed it would also be nice if they played the winning animation at the awards ceremony on Saturday, it's only 30-60 seconds long and can be done as the team is walking from the stands to the field. Some how that was over looked at the Arizona Regional. Those students need to be recognized, many times they spend as much time on the animation or more then those students who work on the robot!

Re: Poll-Play Animations While Refs are Scoring?

I think only during qualifications. Part of the fun of the finals is the nervious anticipation and the camera focusing on the audience and other parts of the field.

Re: Poll-Play Animations While Refs are Scoring?

I agree that Qualification rounds are a good time to preview animations. However, I find it intersesting that "interesting scoring situation" was brought up. Perhaps if you define that it would change some votes.

For example, what qualifies as an interesting scoring situation? This varies from person to person, from ref to ref. Some refs may prefer focus while they decide, others have no problem with animation blaring in the background.

I would like to point out that I really enjoyed (nervously) the moments in GLR when the refs were deciding certain calls, and the camera was zooming in on the questionable situation. In my opinion, that really improved "average joe" consumption of the game.

I guess I'm divided.

Re: Poll-Play Animations While Refs are Scoring?

Based on the number of problems FIRST is already having with its systems at regional, I would say no, because they don’t need to add more complexity. They should play the animations on the big screen during lunch and when that animation wins an award. Also, the animation kiosk (a LCD screen where you could select an animation to watch) they had in the pits at the Pitt regional was great. On Thursday, I sat down and watched dozens of animations from many different regionals.

They didn't even play the animations during lunch.. which upsets me.. we won and didn't see ours played at all.

I'm divided as well, therefore the "Interesting Scoring Situation" option. Considering that we are going to run at least twice as many matches as teams, theres plenty of extra "slots" in which to show the scoring action if its close or potentially controversial, yet still show all the available animations. Basically, there's no possible hard and fast rule. Someone on the field team would have to make the call to show a vid and signal the av guy.
As far as adding to the complexity, the systems are seperate, I'll dicuss it with th av first, but I don't think it would be a problem.

Re: Poll-Play Animations While Refs are Scoring?

I voted no on this, even though I am an animation mentor. The problem with playing the animations between matches is the same as trying to make an announcement --- you can never get the DJ to stop playing music. I'm sick of seeing animations at competitions that are drowned out by other noise. Yes, I see the visuals, but the sound is completely lost. I want to enjoy the animations as the artists intended with full sound.

Animations can easily be played before Opening Ceremonies, during lunch break, and even during the breaks at the end of each day while they setup for the Award Ceremonies. And for goodness sake, PLAY THE AWARD WINNER!!!!
