WIRED magazine- team 842

Today my roommate came back with a fresh issue of wired magazine, he pointed out a blurb on the front page "Robot showdown: the schoolkids who beat MIT"

I remembered a thread about Carl Hayden HS- http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=29336

the article itself was truly inspiring, what an accomplishment! It made me wish I could go and shake their hands at Nationals, and look up to them in awe. They truly deserved to be in Wired- a nationally distributed magazine..

wired's website doesn't seem to have their April issue up online yet, but i'd reccomend going and getting the april issue just for this article.

I just got mine too, it truly is an inspiring article!
842, if one of you guys needs a copy I can scan and email (If you have difficulty finding the April edition, since most places near me take a while to get the new editions out).

Thanks for the offer. The April Wired hit the bookstores in Phoenix last week, so everyone bought a copy.
Josh Davis, the author, didn't mention FIRST, but he did come to our Kickoff, returned for the Arizona Regional and will meet us in Atlanta. I don't think he is going to do a story, but he is hooked on FIRST!
As a FIRSTer you can see we were really building a waterproof FIRST robot. The control system, battery on board, and the knowledge that building a bot that is reliable and can play every match really gave us an advantage. Just goes to show you that the skills we all learn in FIRST really is valid engineering!
BTW, we hear through the ROV grapevine that MIT really does not want to lose to us again. Also Carnegie Mellon is entering this year. The competition just got a lot tougher.
See you in Atlanta

thanks,
Allan

Re: WIRED magazine- team 842

Guess I should post my two cents as well. The MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education ) and the Marine Science Technology National ROV competition was a great experience as Dr. Cameron mentioned. It truley was the experiences in FIRST that gave us the experience to be successful in the competition. Sometimes when teams "like us" win, some people might think it is a fluke, but we have had a pretty long streak of flukes then. I hope more teams decide to do more than just the FIRST competitons, stuff ouside of FIRST. Use the skill you have gained to demonstrate to others what a team that has been through the FIRST experience can do. We also do full size electric vehicle conversions, pumpking launching trebuchet (Catapults), Amusement park Electric trains, Underwater robots and host the lego state finals as well as mentor the local feeder school teams. Share the wealth!! The bottom line is that it is just plain fun!! Check out these two sites, enjoy!

Re: WIRED magazine- team 842

I just saw this on Slashdot this afternoon! It's really a great inspirational story. When I first started reading it, I thought, "Hmm, this sounds like something FIRSTers would do..." then I looked at the pictures in the article, and sure enough, there's an IFI Robot Controller with Victors and Spikes. Great stuff!
