Philly and how to kept your FIRST team a TEAM

Hey, just wanting to say thank you to everyone that volunteer they time to make the Philly Regional a great one. Good job to regional winners , 365, 316, and 56, you were an amazing alliance. Everyone robot was amazing and you should be proud of it.

I have a question. How do you kept your FIRST team a team. I mean when we build our robot we work together but we are not a team. But when it comes to the competition, our team becomes a team and we work together and have fun. I wish our entire season could become more of a team effort and work TOGETHER and have fun. I would like to hear from all teams and if they could give some advice on this question.

Thanks again

Re: Philly and how to kept your FIRST team a TEAM

I'm not exactly sure if you questioning a lack of dedication or a lack of fun on your team, but here's my spiel:

First off, if you're working together at all, you must have a good basis for a team. If you mean you don't feel "connected" like a team while building the robot, try creating an atmostphere that will promote this. Robotics for us in a sense disintegrates the barriers of grade levels, and everyone, regardless of their grade, can work together without feeling inferior/superior to anyone.Try to make everyone on the team work together, and don't discriminate based on grade level or number of years on the team. In your spare time, or while your working, strike up conversation with your teamates who you don't know as well, so they'll feel comfortable. Also, play music and havefood their if you're allowed in your workshop; it kind of lightens the mood a bit.

Hope this helps

Re: Philly and how to kept your FIRST team a TEAM

We're an all year round team so we're always together. We actually hang out together as well, we go to the movies, bowling, like that. When we stay late we have dinners together, and we have our annual spaghetti dinner at the end of the building season where everyone's family and friends come together to celebrate. We're not only a team, we're a family. We actually spend more time with each other than out real family lol.
